I have been close friends with Olivia Newton-John for several decades now and what always strikes me about her is her strength and compassion. 

Despite battling breast cancer since 1992, she still manages to put others first. I sat down with Olivia earlier this week to talk about her new foundation - the Olivia Newton-John Foundation - which will aid the global fight against cancer. She's drawing on her own experiences to drive new research. 

 "I feel great and I'm so grateful I'm able to be in the countryside. I feel so much for people stuck in cities or apartments, or alone - I know you've been going through a hard time in Australia," she said. "I have my animals and my husband. This has actually been one of the rare times in my whole life where I have been in one place for more than three weeks. "I feel guilty admitting I've enjoyed having the excuse to be home. I can't go anywhere, I'm in that bracket with an underlying condition and have to be careful. "Everybody is going through dreadful times and having to worry about their immune systems and are very conscious of the health. People with cancer have had this concern always. "Cancer was here before COVID and it's going to be here a long time after."

Olivia Newton-John on Kelly Preston's 'Private' Battle With Breast Cancer (Exclusive) 

Olivia Newton-John is opening up about Kelly Preston's private battle with breast cancer, and how the late actress' family is healing. 

Speaking with ET's Rachel Smith, the actress and singer reflected on what she missed most about Preston. 

"She was a very a beautiful person, inside and out, and was beautiful to look at," she said of Preston -- who was married to Newton-John's close friend, John Travolta, for nearly 29 years. 

"But she had a gentle spirit and I just feel so, so much for John and the children. It's hard to put into words." Preston died on July 12, at the age of 57, after a two-year battle with breast cancer that she'd kept out of the public eye. 

The news was a shock to the world, and Newton-John said the family has been "coping as well as you can imagine." "Loss is loss, and to lose your mother and your wife is an incredibly difficult thing, and it takes a long time," she shared. "But ultimately it's a private journey and I respect that for them." While she said that she doesn't speak to Travolta on a daily basis, Newton-John shared, "We are in contact and I send my love and support as often as I can."

I would like to start off by chatting more about your memoir, Don’t Stop Believin’. Why did you want to write the book?

Well, it didn’t start off like I suddenly wanted to write it. What happened was, I heard that a movie about my life was wanting to be made in Australia, and you know, to cut to the chase, I wanted to write my version. The right version. I don’t know what they would have said. That was the inspiration, really.

What do you hope readers take away from the book?

I hope they are entertained and they feel motivated, and they feel positive things. That’s not why I wrote the book, but I truly hope they are entertained and feel something.

What was the writing process like for you? Did it energize you, or was it an exhausting process?

It was both. I worked with a wonderful woman who helped me and interviewed me, and we talked for hours. She wrote stuff down; then I would put it in my own words. It was a learning process; it was emotional; it was a journey, and it made me think about a few things I haven’t thought about in a while. But it was fun. So, it was a mixture of all those things.

And how did you come with the title Don’t Stop Believin’?

I have always loved that song, and John Farrar produced the album, and it built my career. I always thought it was such an inspiring lyric. It is one of the first songs I sang with lyrics like that, so positive, and consequently, I have done other albums and more kinds of those things. That song kept coming to my head, and I thought, what a perfect title for this book.

Your career spans more than five decades, so I am sure there are many moments that you will forever cherish. What are some of your favorite moments that you highlight and talk about in the book?

Throughout my career, the first thing that always comes to mind is singing at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games with John Farnham. That was such an incredible experience and I was honored to walk out on that stage and see all those people. It was amazing.


Now, another big issue you talk about in the book is your health and battle with cancer. How are you doing these days?

I am doing really great! I am out of my home, shopping. That may sound like nothing to you, but when you have been through what I have, I mean, I had to learn to walk again. I am very grateful to be back in life and doing things. Do not take anything for granted.


I am so glad to hear that. I mean, at the beginning of the year, tabloids were saying you were basically on your deathbed and ready to cross over.

Yes, I saw that. I thought, it’s time to put this to bed. This is so stupid, and it was a very strange feeling to read that. I don’t know if you have ever read your own death, but it’s odd! [Laughs]. I needed to face this head on and put an end to it. It was stupid.

The tabloids can be quite a pain to deal with. So, is your cancer in full remission?

I don’t call it that. I try not to label things, but I am doing very well. I am living over it and winning over it. How does that sound?

Actress Olivia Newton-John is getting candid in her new book, “Don’t Stop Believing.”
“Extra’s” Renee Bargh caught up with Olivia, who opened up about her battle with cancer. Of her latest health scare, which landed her in the hospital last fall, sparking death rumors, she said, “I was sick and I had to go back into the hospital and I think that word got out. I’d got a tummy bug actually — I think that’s what escalated into that death story.”

Of how she felt when she first heard about the death story, Olivia commented, “Well, the first time you see that it’s kind of bizarre. It’s a strange feeling because it also makes you think about, 'One day this will be real,' as it will be for all of us.”

Olivia is back on her feet after breaking her pelvis due to bones weakened by cancer. Along with doing oral hormone therapy, she elaborated, “I’m walking without any help and I’m doing well. I have some pain.”

Her husband of 10 years, John Easterling, has been by her side through it all. When Renee mentioned that it seems like what they have been through has brought them closer together, Olivia agreed, saying, “It has.”

Olivia also spoke about another special John in her life, John Travolta, who is now rocking a shaved-head look. She approved of the look, saying, “I think it’s great! I actually wrote him. I said, 'You look great like that…' And it’ll give him a whole new image, different roles — lots of villains coming up I think.”

Actress and singer Olivia Newton-John gets personal in a new memoir detailing not only her famed career but her ongoing battle with breast cancer. “You can be a victim, or you can be a winner,” she says. NBC’s Natalie Morales has more.

SPECULATION

Healing in privacy. Olivia Newton-John opened up about why she kept her second bout with breast cancer to herself.

The star, 70, told the show in an interview that will air on Friday, March 8, that she wanted to avoid “speculation.”

She elaborated: “I just decided I wanted to go through it myself. And I did a lot of natural healing and a lot of herbs that my husband [John Easterling] made for me.”

Newton-John revealed in September 2018 that she was battling the illness for the third time in three decades. “I’m one of millions in this fight … in this journey,” she said on Australia’s at the time. “A lot of people see it as a fight, and [however] you choose to see it, that’s your prerogative. … I see it as part of my mission.”

The actress explained that a tumor was found on her lower back in 2017. Furthermore, she shared her natural treatment methods. “A lot of cannabis, my husband grows for me. In California, it’s legal to grow a certain amount of plants for your own medicinal purposes,” she noted. “He makes me tinctures … and they help with pain, they help with sleep. So, I’m very lucky that I live in a state where it’s legal and that I have a husband that is a plant medicine man.”

Newton-John previously battled breast cancer in 1992 before undergoing a partial mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. She was diagnosed with the illness for a second time in 2013.

The “Physical” songstress kept a positive outlook amid her health struggles. “I’m not going to be one of those statistics, I’m going to be fine,” she told Australia’s show in September 2017. “I’ll probably deal with this in my life as an ongoing thing. I think that you can live with cancer like you can live with other things if you take care of yourself.” ( Source US Weekly )

OLIVIA Newton-John has opened up about the shocking rumours that spread around the globe in January that the Australian star was near death. In a new interview with People magazine in the US, the singing icon (pictured) revealed that she has actually spent the past six months quietly recovering from a cancerinduced pelvic fracture. “Those things are so stupid. Why not just go, ‘Here I am, and I’m fine!” she told the magazine when explaining why she immediately uploaded a denial message to social media. “We just nipped it in the bud.”

Newton-John was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and it returned in 2013. She’s now in the midst of treating stage 4 breast cancer, which spread to her sacrum.

She fractured her pelvis in September when taking part in a cancer walk for her Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne.

She was admitted to hospital for more radiation, missing out on a planned 70th birthday celebration, and is recuperating at home in LA with her husband.

John Travolta was honored with Variety’s first Cinema Icon Award at a party on Tuesday night at the Hotel du Cap in Cap d’Antibes in Southern France, following the world premiere in Cannes of his new mob biopic “Gotti.”

Arriving alongside wife and co-star Kelly Preston, daughter and “Gotti” actress Ella Bleu Travolta, director Kevin Connolly, producer Edward Walson, and members of the “Gotti” cast, Travolta said it was a “humbling moment” to be honored by Variety 40 years after his first appearance in Cannes.

The star said the reception to the new film, which will be released June 15 by MoviePass, in conjunction with Vertical Entertainment, “blew me away.”

“There’s nothing like the Cannes Film Festival” to premiere a new film, he said.

With fireworks bursting over the Croisette and 50 Cent performing to a packed terrace outside the Eden-Roc restaurant, the night featured a video montage of the star’s career highlights, including tributes from the likes of Robert DeNiro, Oprah Winfrey, and “Grease” co-star Olivia Newton John.
