She says: "She was an incredible inspiration to me, how she opened up about what it is to have cancer. About surviving and thriving and dealing with the ups and downs of her life. I had this extraordinary privilege of knowing her, not so much as an actress and a star, but as a human being. When I meet women like that, they are the women I am excited by."

A-listers bid farewell

As one of the most famous entertainers ever to have hailed from Australia, it was fitting that Dame Olivia Newton-John should be given a very special send-off. And she certainly was, with stars including Sir Elton John, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton and Hugh Jackman all taking part in last week’s state memorial for the Grease actress, who died in August last year aged 73. She had been living with breast cancer on and off since 1992.

Sir Elton and Mariah were among those who paid tribute via video at the moving service, which was held at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, Australia. “She was such a wonderful force of nature. She was funny, kind, warm and talented, and every time we got together, we laughed and laughed and laughed,” the Candle in the Wind singer told the thousands of fans who watched the memorial. “Throughout her career, I watched her grow and grow and grow to be the artist she became.”

Of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, which the star set up in Melbourne in 2012 to help others, he said: “It is a testament to what she did for so many millions of people. She fought her disease with the most incredible courage and a bravery that stays with me forever.”

Mariah said in her tribute: “She really affected my life. As a little girl, I loved her so much. Grease was probably the first movie I ever saw. I looked up to her so much and when I got to meet her, she was just as nice as she was a star.”

During the ceremony, Olivia’s husband John Easterling, to whom she was married from 2008 until her death, and her daughter Chloe Lattanzi paid tributes that left many fans in tears. “She’s been honoured by prime ministers and presidents and the Queen… but what made her most happy was being at the ranch, being with the horses, being with the chickens and the dogs and the cat, or sitting in the courtyard just listening to bird songs,” John said, adding: “She was the most courageous woman I’ve ever met.”

REMEMBERING A MOTHER

Singer and actress Chloe received a standing ovation. “My favourite thing to do was watch her watching the birds and the flowers, smelling her roses, and the joy it brought to her face was a thing of beauty. I loved making her tea and then making it five times again until I got it right,” the 37-year-old said.

“I loved our snuggles. I would crawl into bed with her late at night, even if I was 20 years old. I loved the way she smelled. I love how she loved fully and completely.”

Former Neighbours actress Delta Goodrem performed a medley of Olivia’s greatest hits during the service, while others who spoke about the singer and actress via video link included musicians Barry Gibb, Dolly Parton and Sir Cliff Richard, as well as Australian actress Nicole Kidman, who described how she was inspired by Olivia.

“She was just a light in this world, which I think all of us feel. And I grew up with her, listening to her – I would perform her songs at school. When I first saw Grease, I was like: ‘I want to be Olivia Newton-John.’ So to be able to pay tribute to her tonight is incredibly important to all of us. We all send you our love, Livvie,” she said.

Olivia Newton-John’s kindness was like magic. Sadly she passed away earlier this year in August, 30 years after she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. 

 

In her final months, the Grease actress continued to devote her time to others who were diagnosed with cancer. She was a beacon of hope, support and kindness to them. Her genuine kindness remains part of the legacy her friends continue to celebrate. 

Jane Seymour told HELLO!: “I know personally that even at the end she went out of her way to help people that she knew who were going through cancer. “Even though she was incredibly frail herself. She would actually spend a lot of time, effort and thought and actually pick up the phone and speak to people we both knew who were going through the battle. That was just magic to me. “That she was passing on her love and her wisdom and her compassion. Yeah, that’s it.” ....

Un peu plus de deux mois après le décès d’Olivia Newton-John, son mari John Easterling a donné plus de détails sur certains de ses derniers moments avant sa mort. 

  S’adressant au Herald Sun, John a expliqué à quel point Olivia se sentait privilégiée d’avoir accès à un traitement approprié contre le cancer. 

 Cela a profondément influencé son dernier souhait, qui était que les autres patients atteints de cancer aient les mêmes opportunités qu’elle, grâce à son centre de bien-être Olivia Newton-John. 

 Il a déclaré: « Son rêve avec le centre de bien-être Olivia Newton-John était que les Australiens atteints de cancer aient accès aux types de traitements similaires. »

Le couple a toujours plaidé en faveur du cannabis comme traitement alternatif ou complémentaire contre le cancer, et a souvent fait pression pour changer la réglementation du cannabis médical à cause de cela. John a soutenu que son utilisation « a sans aucun doute prolongé la vie d’Olivia et lui a donné une qualité de vie ».

Kelly is excited to have sung a duet with the Grease actress that is coming out soon on Olivia’s Greatest Hits Deluxe Edition due out later in October. Olivia, of course, was an inspiration to her when it comes to music.

Peter Ford: Details around Olivia Newton-John’s memorial service revealed

On Monday morning, he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that the plans for Olivia Newton-John’s State Memorial are being finalised.

“It’s two months now since Olivia passed, and a lot of people have been saying why hasn’t it happened,” he said.

“There has been some differences of opinion between the family in America and the organisers here as to what exactly should be done.”

The late Olivia Newton-John has returned to the ARIA Charts with her 2018 compilation ‘Hopelessly Devoted: The Hits’, which has seen a boost in popularity after the Grease icon died last week.

The 20-song release features many of Newton-John’s biggest hits, including chart-toppers ‘Banks Of The Ohio’ (1971), ‘I Honestly Love You’ (1974), ‘You’re The One That I Want’ (1978 ) and ‘Physical’ (1981). The album came in at Number Five on the latest edition of the weekly ARIA Albums Chart, while the original soundtrack for Grease (from which ‘You’re The One That I Want’ was pulled) charted at Number Eight.

In addition, ‘Hopelessly Devoted: The Hits’ has come in at Number One on the Top Australian Albums Chart, while 1981’s ‘Physical’ has landed at Number 15, and ‘Two Strong Hearts’ – her 2015 live album with John Farnham – placed at Number 17.

Three of Newton-John’s classic singles have also returned to the spotlight: on the latest Top Australian Singles chart, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ is Number Four, ‘You’re The One That I Want’ came in at Number Seven, and ‘ Xanadu’ landed at Number 11.

Newton-John was inducted into ARIA Hall Of Fame in 2002, and had topped the charts 11 times across her storied career. Her first studio album to come in at Number One was her 26th (and final) full-length effort, a collaborative holiday album with Farnham titled ‘Friends For Christmas’. Over the years, she’d racked up 27 Platinum certifications, and six Gold.
