Singles that have made this Australian cultural capital proud
Canberra may be the capital of Australia, Sydney its most recognisable city, but Melbourne is its music capital, with a thriving live scene that overshadows its east coast counterpart. Indeed, as iconic as the Sydney Opera House might be, you’re far more likely to check out Amyl & The Sniffers at The Tote or the Cherry Bar or somewhere else down on AC/DC Lane.
Still a relatively young city, founded by free settlers from Van Diemen’s Land around 190 years ago, Melbourne has given rise to the little-known Melbourne Bounce – a modern subgenre of electro house and not a lot else (if you discount the 65,000-year-old Aboriginal music played by the dwindling indigenous population). Uniquely isolated from the rest of the western world, Australia (and New Zealand) are more inclined to reflect back what comes from the Motherland and, even more so, the United States.
In other words, Melbourne rocks, and it shakes its daks sometimes, too. Leading lights from the city are as musically dissimilar as the upstanding John Farnham and the pothead pixie supreme himself, Daevid Allen of Gong. Moreover, Melbourne is the kind of place that likes to throw up surprises, like the song Where The Wild Roses Grow, the duet between natives Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue that caused consternation on its release in 1995, but ultimately really worked.

Just days out from Eurovision’s finale in Vienna, Aussie songbird Delta Goodrem is finally starting to feel the nerves. And while she’s used to performing on stages around the world in front of thousands, the reasoning behind the jitters is a little more personal.
“I mean, Olivia Newton-John has been on the Eurovision stage,” she gushes to Woman’s Day. “And we’ve had Céline Dion. Those two women are the biggest influences for me in music since I started.
“That’s pretty amazing to know that the two people who I love so dearly have both been a part of the Eurovision family.”
It’s a connection Delta, 41, cherishes. Over the course of her career, she’s written songs for both Olivia and Céline, sang duets with Olivia on stage and portrayed the late Grease goddess in the 2018 miniseries Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted To You.
It’s been a dream come true for the singer, who first met Olivia in New York when she was seven.
“We’d just gone to Phantom Of The Opera and it was the first time I’d seen the theatre,” recalls Delta. “All of a sudden,
Sandy from Grease walks in the door and I said to Mum, ‘Sandy is there, Mum. It’s Sandy!’ Olivia heard my accent, and she walked over to our table and said, ‘I hear you’re not from around here, then?’
“She talked to my mum and said, ‘I hope I see you around tomorrow,’ and the next day, I walked around New York looking for Olivia Newton-John! I was looking for her always.”
‘It’s amazing to think that Olivia has been a part of Eurovision’
Their bond strengthened when, in 2003, Delta was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at age 18. The Born To Try hitmaker says Olivia, who herself had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, reached out to her.
“She wrote a long letter talking about her cancer journey and how it’s a gift to give back to people, and we bonded instantly,” Delta remembers.
Tragically, less than 20 years later, Olivia would lose her battle with the disease, but her death has brought new perspective to the jobs Delta chooses to align herself with.
Eurovision not only feels like a full-circle moment, but also as though she’s following in the footsteps of her mentor.
“I’m just really grateful that Olivia and Céline have been a part of it,” she tells us.
Delta is set to hit the Eurovision stage in Austria for the second semi-final this Thursday, which will be streamed live on YouTube, and her song Eclipse has bookmakers predicting she could be the first Aussie to win the grand final on Sunday. Given the track was released the same week as an actual partial lunar eclipse happened, Delta hopes the cosmic alliance will help her.
“I want Aussies to be with me and for us to do this together,” she enthuses. “I’m so excited and grateful. I’m just enjoying the fact that I get to be a part of such an incredible community and family. It’s been really, really fun.”

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
Before she was Sandy in Grease, Olivia was a budding singer, growing up in Melbourne. In 1954, when she was just five, Olivia and her family sailed from England to their true home of Australia. “I’m so happy about finally becoming an Australian,” Olivia proudly said when she became a citizen in 1994 at the request of her daughter Chloe Lattanzi. “When Chloe heard the news, she was jumping around, just ecstatic.”
Avant d'être Sandy dans Grease, Olivia était une chanteuse en herbe et a grandi à Melbourne. En 1954, alors qu'elle n'avait que cinq ans, Olivia et sa famille ont quitté l'Angleterre pour rejoindre leur véritable patrie, l'Australie. "Je suis tellement heureuse de devenir enfin australienne", a déclaré fièrement Olivia lorsqu'elle est devenue citoyenne en 1994 à la demande de sa fille Chloe Lattanzi. "Quand Chloé a appris la nouvelle, elle sautait partout, juste ravie."
L’événement incontestable du festival de Deauville 1978 est la présentation du film Grease de Randal Kleiser. Inconnu un an plus tôt avant d’être révélé par La Fièvre du samedi soir de John Badham, John Travolta a fait le voyage, avec sa partenaire, Olivia Newton-John, et crée une émeute à chacun de ses déplacements dans Deauville.

Avant la projection du film, les portes vitrées du cinéma du casino ne résistent pas à la bousculade des fans et finissent par céder. Cette ambiance survoltée oblige les organisateurs à engager, pour la première fois, des gardes du corps afin d’assurer la sécurité rapprochée des stars. Une première qui deviendra vite la règle.

Semaine du 7 septembre 1974, le single I HONESTLY OVE YOU rentre dans le TOP5 du classement BILLBOARD TOP50 EASY LISTENING, se hisse à la 19ème place du HOT100. Fort de ce succès, l'album IF YOU LOVE ME LET ME KNOW reprend des couleurs dans les charts : 21ème position dans le BILLBOARD 200 et 4ème dans le BILLBOARD HOT COUNTRY LPS !
