Le film XANADU s'est fait massacré à sa sortie par les journalistes .. j'avoue que je fut déçu la première fois que j'ai vu ce film sur grand écran ... les dialogues étaient chiants .. mais ONJ, la musique et les danses me faisaient oublier le reste ...

Her death left Grease fans around the world in mourning, but six months after her death, Olivia Newton-John is finally getting the send-off she deserves in her beloved Australia. Aussie fans will have a chance to honour and remember the beautiful star at a state memorial service at Hamer Hall at the Arts Centre in Melbourne on February 26, organised by Olivia’s family. While it’s unsure if Olivia’s only child, Chloe Lattanzi, will attend, the memorial will feature special tributes from friends and family. Delta Goodrem – who played Olivia in a 2018 biopic – will put on a musical performance.

Le film
Après le succès phénoménal de Grease en 1978, Olivia Newton-John a joué dans cette comédie musicale au kitsch assumé avec panache aux côtés du grand Gene Kelly et d’un jeune premier un peu fade, Michael Beck, rapidement perdu de vue par la suite.
Très mal accueilli par la critique, ce film sur l’histoire d’amour entre une muse et un jeune artiste peintre dans le Los Angeles de la fin des 70’s sera la dernière comédie musicale dans laquelle ce sera illustrée Olivia Newton-John, qui, après un nouveau bide au box-office (aux côtés de son ancien partenaire John Travolta) s’éloignera progressivement du cinéma et retournera à sa carrière initiale de chanteuse de country pop.
Cependant, malgré sa mauvaise réputation, le côté camp de Xanadu lui a permis de devenir une comédie musicale un peu culte pour les amateurs du genre et sa ressortie en édition Blu-Ray remasterisée est l’occasion de le réévaluer.
Librement inspiré de la très sympathique (et calibrée) comédie musicale Down to Earth avec Rita Hayworth (1947), le film de Robert Greenwald était supposé, au départ, être un film de roller disco (oui, vous avez bien lu, « du disco sur rollers ») avant de dévier quelque peu de sa trajectoire, sans pour autant perdre de vue le disco (bien présent dans la B.O.) et en conservant quelques scènes sans prétention de rollers. Mais si l’intrigue finale tourne autour de la création artistique, il faut bien admettre que le scénario dans son ensemble n’est qu’un vague prétexte pour proposer un musical complètement débridé, où la conception classique des années 40-50 (incarnée par Gene « Singin’ in the Rain » Kelly) affronte celle, plus moderne, de la fin des années 70-début des années 80, avec ses influences punk et disco, ses couleurs flashy et ses mouvements de caméra dynamiques.
Alors que le film avec Rita Hayworth était un pur film de studio à la gloire de la star de Gilda, le « remake » surfe aussi de manière évidente sur le succès de Grease et se présente comme un véhicule pour mettre en avant Olivia Newton-John, qui interprète ici plusieurs titres, en solo ou en duo, qui connurent un grand succès grâce à la B.O., qui se vendit très bien à l’époque malgré les faibles performances du long-métrage en salles.

I have to admit before the concert, I wasn’t that familiar with Olivia Newton-John. Sure, Iike everyone I’ve heard of Grease and have listened to some of the songs from the musical which she starred in. However, unlike many of the audience I was not a fan. Olivia Newton-John is just not famous or well known among teenagers today, but music doesn’t have an expiry date and I was curious to hear these famous songs live.
The almost capacity crowd at the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre were treated to a virtuoso performance with ONJ performing a selection of her hits including Xanadu, Physical and Hopelessly Devoted to You mixed in with some iconic covers. Perhaps most surprising was her energy and bright personality unlike many modern artists she turned up on time, appeared to enjoy performing and even cracked some jokes between songs. She belted out her songs with a passion. The audience enthusiastically and happily, if often tunelessly, singing along with her. The vibrant atmosphere was infectious and all too soon goodbyes and thank you’s were being said… After two hours, a standing ovation and cheers of of ‘Encore!’ saw Olivia return to perform one final song Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
A thoroughly enjoyable night out which gave me a new appreciation for songs that “are not my generation”. Live music can do that in a way that sometimes an album heard on headphones can’t. But until next time I need to update my itunes library.

Après des semaines d'attente, la grande finale de l'Eurovision 2016 s'est déroulée ce samedi 14 mai en Suède.
Faisant partie des favoris de cette année, le français Amir Haddad a enflammé la scène. Et si le jeune homme n'a pas gagné la première place, il a terminé à la très belle sixième position.
C'est la chanteuse Jamala, représentante de l'Ukraine, qui a remporté l'Eurovision 2016 avec son titre "1944", chanson sur la déportation de son peuple par Staline.
Les jurys professionnels avaient d’abord plébiscité l’Australienne Dami Im, qui possède une très jolie voix, mais les téléspectateurs ont offert un final haletant en donnant le plus de points à deux pays rivaux sur la scène diplomatique.
et on peut regretter quelques peu les folles années de l'EUROVISION avec ses chansons Kitschissimes servies par des looks improbables ..
Olivia Newton-John fut en 1974 l'une des favorites de cette manifestation haute en couleurs !! ABBA fit la différence en remportant le concours, Olivia allait quitter la vieille Europe pour développer une carrière bien plus florissante aux USA !

Review : Steve Real / NEVER TOO LATE
In the liner notes it says „Music is the language of the world“. After nearly 15 years of working as a back-up singer and vocal coach for Olivia, Steve Real debuts with his own „language“: an album called „Never too late“. This collection of songs delivers various musical influences, from Latin to Jazz, Funk and Soul, Rock and Pop. We all knew by know that Steve has a great vocal range, proving his solid vocal abilities through singing duets with Olivia or appearing along colleague Marlén Landin on various of Olivia’s recordings. To me „Never too late“ appears as a statement of a true and devoted Artist who sticks to what he does best: singing! The opener „Never too late“ reminds of Stevie Wonder accompanied with Incognito’s „Don’t you worry bout a thing“. A great and danceable number that reflects nothing but fun.
The duet „Thicker than water“ with his daughter Lauren Chanel is a catchy tune and may anticipate a career for another young girl singer in her own rights...
One of my highlights (we all gotta be honest bying this CD supporting Mr. Real, but we wanted to have the duet „Fulfilled“ with Olivia Newton-John, don’t we?) besides „Fulfilled“ is the heartfelt homage „Selfless Soul“. Not knowing Steve in person or having an idea who is meant with that tune you can feel it’s a woman very close to him getting musical dedication. Although liking the uptempo numbers on „Never too late“ very much I personally prefer the ballads this time. And when he raises his soulful voice in spanish on „Back to the beginning“ you can only guess that melancholy may take a bigger part in Real’s life. The album shows a balanced mixture between Popballads and Dance Popsongs with a light but intensive feel to them.
Looking back on ONJ’s „One Woman’s Live Journey“ CD, on which the Farnham Band appears, it’s now about the ONJ Band to play on Steve Real’s CD. All the household names are featured here: from Dane Bryant, Marlén Landin, Matt McKenzie, Warren Ham to Mark Beckett. Those are the people we know from Olivia’s concerts around the world. So it might've seemed obvious that Steve took the guys and worked the album out in Vegas, where the ONJ Band plays since 2014 at the famous Flamingo Hotel.
„Never too late“ was long expected and Steve Real didn’t disappoint his (ONJ) fans at all. It’s just never too late for good music. But indeed this music gets delivered by a damn good voice!

TWO STRONG HEARTS LIVE

John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John have a chemistry and friendship you just can’t fake. And zero egos.
Some stars wouldn’t let their signature hits and show-stopping anthems become duets.
But on this live souvenir of their recent joint tour you have Farnham getting Physical and ONJ even starts national anthem You’re the Voice.
The fact these two were having serious fun is not lost in the recorded translation. You also see new sides, like Farnham blitzing Over the Rainbow and Livvie cutting loose with rock wailing on Hit the Road Jack.
That’s another one of the joys here, we rarely get to hear Olivia live and from the divine thrills of Xanadu to the spine chills of I Honestly Love You it’s our loss. And both know they’re privileged to be singing Peter Allen’s Tenterfield Saddler.
On the actual duets, Grease favourites Summer Nights and You’re the One That I Want, Farnham slips into Travolta mode. You just wish there was a DVD to see the full effect of him in leather pants and dancing.
There’s the underrated No One Comes Close, Farnham sings Suddenly better than ONJ’s original duet partner Cliff Richard and Burn For You works as a duet (it’d probably work as death metal track).
As AC/DC don’t play it any more, Farnham ends with It’s a Long Way To the Top If You Wanna Rock and Roll. Even Livvie discovers there’s a touch of Bon Scott deep, deep inside as she does stadium pub rock work amid all the bagpipes and the audible joy of The Voice singing his favourite song.
Welcome to double happiness.

Une bonne petite comédie estivale !

Le magazine ne lui donne qu'un seul 7 mais reconnait allègrement la composition parfaite d'Olivia Newton-John en bourgeoise déjantée ! Et la critique reste positive !
