‘MY PROMISE TO MUM’

ON A BITTERSWEET OCCASION, THE SINGER LOOKS BACK

Lattanzi admitted to People she “didn’t feel strong at all” when her mum passed away.

It’s a song that was years in the making, but on September 26, to mark what would have been Olivia NewtonJohn’s 76th birthday, Chloe Lattanzi finally released the single she promised her mother she would. Called ‘Phoenix’, the tune is something Newton-John encouraged her daughter to finish before she passed away from breast cancer two years ago.

“She would listen to it every day and she would just be like, ‘Come on baby, put it out, put it out,’” Lattanzi, 38, recently told People. “But then Mama took a downward turn and the most important thing to me is taking care of my mum.”

With the song now released, Lattanzi is proud to have kept her promise and be able to honour her mum’s memory.

“For anyone who’s struggling with issues of the body, the mind, or the spirit, I want it to be a reminder to them that they are incredibly more powerful than they could ever imagine,” she said.

CDJAPAN

PETIT ECRAN

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN AT THE BBC

The four-time Grammy Award winner and beloved star of Grease lost her long battle with cancer in August at the age of 73.

In tribute, this trip down memory lane draws on archive performances and interviews to take an affectionate look back at the life and career of the singer  who was born in Cambridge but moved to Australia aged five. It’s followed by the chance to see her star opposite Gene Kelly in the dazzling musical fantasy Xanadu (11.15pm) and Only Olivia (12.50am), a 1978 TV special in which the singer, dressed in a long flowing white dress, performs a selection of ballads and feeds horses in the countryside. It’s all very 1970s. Saturday, 10.15pm, BBC2

Olivia’s legacy offers new hope

IN news that would make the late Olivia Newton-John’s heart sing, a team at the ONJ Cancer Research Institute in Melbourne – which she helped to build – has announced a breakthrough in a potential treatment of deadly pancreatic cancer.

While still in its early stages and yet to undergo human clinical trials the research, published on Wednesday in the journal Cell Reports, suggests a novel drug target that can improve the response of pancreatic tumours to immunotherapy.

This is urgently needed as pancreatic cancer is almost completely unresponsive to existing immunotherapy, a powerful treatment for cancer that helps treat disease by reactivating the immune system to allow it to recognise and remove cancer cells.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancers and difficult to diagnose early, as there are few symptoms. It also has very low survival rates – only 11 per cent of patients are alive five years after their initial diagnosis.

Around 4260 new cases are diagnosed each year in Australia.

The researchers reported the results of the study provided “strong rationale” for further development.

The study was led by Professor Matthias Ernst, director of the ONJ Cancer Research Institute and head of La Trobe University’s School of Cancer Medicine.

He cautioned it was likely to take several years before the current research could reach clinical applications, but the institute was uniquely placed to accelerate the findings towards future clinical trials.

“Because we work in the same building as our oncologist colleagues at Austin Health, our discoveries in the laboratory can be quickly translated into patient trials,” Prof Ernst said.
