This year’s inductees include a record number of female directors and filmmakers of color.
LOS ANGELES » This year’s inductees into the National Film Registry include a record number of female directors and filmmakers of color as well as a new crop of movies ranging from a silent short film thriller, classic musicals and an acclaimed Batman film.
The Library of Congress announced Monday that films including “The Dark Knight,” “Suspense,” musicals “Grease” and “The Blues Brothers” along with Sidney Poitier’s Oscar-winning performance in “Lilies of the Field” are among the 25 movies tapped for preservation this year.
The national library said this year’s selections include a record nine films directed by women and filmmakers of color.
“With the inclusion of diverse filmmakers, we are not trying to set records but rather to set the record straight by spotlighting the astonishing contributions women and people of color have made to American cinema, despite facing oftenoverwhelming hurdles,” Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, said in a statement.
Hayden and film historian Jacqueline Stewart will discuss the new selections in a television special on Turner Classic Movies tonight at 8.
The library has selected movies for preservation because of their cultural, historic and artist importance since the registry began in 1988.
This year’s picks bring the total number of films in the registry to 800.
Music was featured in this year’s selection, including the film adaptation of Broadway musicals “Cabin in the Sky” in 1943 and “Grease,” which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in 1978.
“The Blues Brothers” director John Landis called the film’s selection into the registry a “delightful surprise.”
“The film is the result of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s genuine passion for rhythm and blues and our mutual love for these great African American artists and the city of Chicago,” said Landis, who has two projects in the registry including “Animal House” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
The library chose a few more memorable titles such as Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker,” the animated film “Shrek” and “The Joy Luck Club,” a movie based on Amy Tan’s bestselling book that told the saga of two generations of Asian American women.
The 2010 documentary “Freedom Riders,” also making its way into the registry, told an inspiring story about civil rights activists who fought against racial segregation on buses and trains in the 1960s.
Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” was a blockbuster and the top public vote-getter.

Passionate Plea
Aussie icon Olivia Newton-John has made a passionate plea for those ignoring social distancing rules to think of the impact their actions could have on the more vulnerable members of the community.
The 71-year-old performer, who is battling breast cancer for the third time, joined Jonesy & Amanda to chat about the current social climate and the impact COVID-19 could have on her.
“It’s a very difficult time but the whole planet is going through it, and it’s kind of a great unifier in a way… it’s a test of how well we regard each other,” she explained.
“When they had the Spanish Flu, they had no way of communicating the way that they do now so that is lucky in a way that we can stop the spread if we pay attention and do what we’re asked.
She added, “But we can do it, it’s for the good of all of us… I hope the young people listen because I remember when you’re young, you think you’re invulnerable to these things but unfortunately it’s affecting all of us. They need to listen to protect their parents and grandparents.”
Olivia also took the time to send her love to all of us in Australia, saying: “I think of you all and everybody that I know in Australia. I miss you guys and I wish I could be in two places at once so I was really torn when I had to leave.”
Her final message? “Stay well, stay healthy, wash your hands and keep your distance!”

"C'est une période très difficile, mais la planète entière traverse cette période, et c'est en quelque sorte rassembleur ... c'est un test sur la façon dont nous nous considérons", a-t-elle expliqué.
"Quand ils ont eu la grippe espagnole, ils n'avaient aucun moyen de communiquer comme ils le font maintenant, c'est une chance que nous puissions arrêter la propagation si nous prêtons attention et faisons ce qu'on nous demande."
Elle a ajouté: «Mais nous pouvons le faire, c'est pour notre bien à tous… J'espère que les jeunes écoutent parce que je me souviens quand vous êtes jeune, vous pensez que vous êtes invulnérable à ces choses mais malheureusement cela nous affecte tous . Ils doivent écouter pour protéger leurs parents et grands-parents. »
Olivia a également pris le temps d'envoyer son amour à eux tous en Australie, en disant: «Je pense à vous tous et à tous ceux que je connais en Australie. Vous me manquez et j'aimerais pouvoir être à deux endroits à la fois, donc j'étais vraiment déchiré lorsque j'ai du partir. »
Son dernier message? "Restez bien, restez en bonne santé, lavez-vous les mains et gardez vos distances!"

TROP JEUNE POUR MOURIR
Le 4 février 1983, Karen Carpenter disparaissait.
Elle souffrait d'anorexie mentale, une maladie peu connue à l'époque, et mourut à l'âge de 32 ans d'un arrêt cardiaque, plus tard attribué aux complications dues à sa maladie.
Les compétences de Karen Carpenter à la batterie étaient considérables, bien qu'elle ait été plus connue pour ses capacités vocales.
Dans sa bio Olivia Newton-John a écrit à propos des disparitions de Karen, John Denver, des membres de sa famille :
"J'ai souvent l'impression que leurs âmes planent autour de moi quand je joue. Ce sont mes guides spirituels à qui je demande de me soutenir avant chaque spectacle et ils me gardent fort. Ils sont partis, mais leur amour ne meurt jamais."
Elle a également décrit quand elle a entendu la nouvelle écrasante du décès de Karen: "C'était comme si le ciel était tombé sur Terre. Mon estomac a touché le sol "
