It is a crisp autumn night this Thursday, November 16, 2017, as we make our way into the pristine Bergen Performing Arts Center, a jewel of a theatre located in charming Englewood, NJ. We’re here to see four-time Grammy winner, songstress, and actress Olivia Newton-John. Probably best known for her portrayal of Sandy in the hit movie, Grease, Olivia Newton-John has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. She’s also made headlines for her charitable work helping others after her own challenges with breast cancer, notably through the establishment of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia. Before the concert begins, we have an opportunity to catch up with fans who have traveled from near and far to support one of their most treasured celebrity icons — a woman whom they’ve adored for decades for her acting and musical talents, her tenderheartedness and compassion, and her ability to deal with adversity with dignity and grace....

FAIRFIELD — Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John is ready to take Cache Creek guests on a journey through her music early next month.
“I’ll walk them down memory lane,” she said in a phone interview as she was traveling to the Nashville airport. “It may not be in order.”
She will also perform a song from “Liv On,” an album she recorded last year with Beth Nielsen Chapman and Amy Sky. The music was chosen to aid and comfort those experiencing grief and loss. It was inspired by the untimely loss of her sister, Rona Newton-John, who died of brain cancer in 2013.
“I’m really proud of it,” she said.
Newton-John faced her second breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year. The first was in the early 1990s.
When asked how the cancer treatment was going, the 69-year-old, who was born in England and raised in Australia, proclaimed victory.
“I won over it. I’m doing well. I’m feeling good. I think the proof is in the pudding that I’m making up the shows I had to cancel earlier this year,” Newton-John said.
She’s spoken publicly about using medical marijuana. Fan reaction has been positive, she said.
“There’s been extensive research on how the plant can heal,” she said, citing how it’s helped children with epilepsy and people with Alzheimer’s disease. “It’s all out there. It’s being vilified by the pharmaceuticals.”
Keeping positive thoughts has helped her during both diagnoses.
Years ago, in Australia, she ran into a women in the restroom who told her, “I had cancer 30 years ago. I’m fine.” Now, Newton-John said she can share that news with other women.
Newton-John has sold more than 100 million albums, won four Grammys and had 10 No. 1 hits.
She starred in 1978 alongside John Travolta in the movie “Grease.” The pair did duets on “You’re The One That I Want” and “Summer Nights.” Her solo on “Hopelessly Devoted To You,” was another chart-topper from the film.
When asked what the biggest career surprises have been, she quickly answered, “All of them,” before narrowing it down to two.
“I never expected ‘Grease’ would still be talked about 40 years later,” Newton-John said. “I never thought ‘Physical’ would be No. 1 for 10 weeks.”
Two years ago, Billboard Magazine posted “Physical” as the No. 8 tune on their Top 100 Songs Of All Time. The magazine listed it in 2010 as “The Sexiest Song of All Time.”
Newton-John wraps up her tour Dec. 10 in Redding. Then, she’s taking some time off.

Olivia Newton-John has been a pop star for more than four decades.
She got her professional start on Australian TV and radio, and cut her first single in 1966. Newton-John made a name for herself with the release of her first solo album, 1971’s If Not For You. On that record and several that followed, the singer established herself as a first-rate interpreter of other songwriters’ material. In the mid-1970s, she scored a nearly unprecedented 10 consecutive No. 1 singles on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Newton-John would go on to blockbuster success onscreen in 1978’s Grease, and achieved a kind of cult status with her role opposite Gene Kelly in 1980’s Xanadu. Following a bout with cancer in the 1990s, she placed greater emphasis upon recording more of her own songs. Newton-John now ranks as one of the most successful recording artists in history, with more than 100 million records sold.
Asked which of her many records is a favorite, Newton-John is initially nonplussed. “I’ve never really thought about it,” she tells CP in a phone interview. “I don’t listen to my music, so I’ve never sat down and listened to a whole album.”
But after thinking for a moment about the 30-plus albums she has recorded and released, Newton-John names her 1994 album, Gaia: One Woman’s Journey. “That was the first album that I totally wrote and co-produced myself,” she recalls. “It was right after I had breast cancer for the first time, and it was very, very personal to me.”
Last year, Newton-John released Liv On, a collaborative album with Texas-born Beth Nielsen-Chapman and Toronto-based Amy Sky. Focused on grief and healing, the project was inspired by the death of Newton-John’s sister Rona, who died from a brain tumor. “I wrote a song for her in her memory and sent it around to my friends and family,” Newton-John says. “They came back and said, ‘Oh, that’s lovely. Do you have any more songs like that?’“
Nielsen-Chapman had written a kind of grief anthem, “Sand and Water,” and Sky had recently lost her mother. “We all were in kind of a phase of understanding what this was about. Both wonderful songwriters — who are dear friends of mine — agreed to do it,” Newton-John says. “We recorded the album in Las Vegas when I was between shows.”
More recently, Newton-John released Friends for Christmas with Australian pop singer John Farnham; it’s Newton-John’s fourth holiday-themed album. “That’s always a fun thing to do; I love collaborating,” she says. “I like doing duets, and I like recording with other people.”
Newton-John was forced to suspend her tour earlier this year when she learned that her cancer had returned and spread. But now, after a period of treatment, she’s energized and ready to return to the stage. “I’m really good,” she says.
Olivia Newton-John is slated to perform Saturday at the Adler Theatre in downtown Davenport. Quad-City Times reporter Amanda Hancock talked with her ahead of the show about why she's a cancer thriver -- not just a survivor -- her latest albums and what it was like to film "Grease."

Olivia Newton-John was just 15 years old when she started on the path to stardom and a lengthy career — something she’s been reflecting on recently.
“I’m writing a book right now so I’ve been thinking about things I haven’t thought about for a long time,” Newton-John said in a recent phone interview. “It’s hard to imagine that I did all of those things. It’s been a fantastic career, I’m very grateful and the fact I’m still going makes it even better.”

Olivia Newton-John was born on 26 September 1948 in Cambridge, England, the youngest of three children. The family emigrated to Australia when she was five, when her father, Brinley or ‘Bryn’, was appointed dean of the University of Melbourne’s Ormond College. Given her family pedigree, it seemed inevitable that she would be wise beyond her years from a young age. Her grandfather was a Nobel Prize-winning physicist whose best friend was Albert Einstein, her father was a Second World War Enigma code breaker. But it was clear early on that her aptitude was for singing, not science – at 15 months old, she could recognise musical notes and imitate them; by two, she was pitch perfect.
By the time she was a teenager, Newton-John was obsessed with pop music and sang all the time at home. In public, however, it was a different story. ‘If they asked me at school to get up and sing, I was always too shy,’ she said. It was her older sister, Rona, who entered Newton-John, aged 12, into a competition to find a lookalike for British child star Hayley Mills. She won and it gave her the confidence to perform publicly, motivating her to form a band called Sol Four, which eventually led to appearances on television. Her big break came in 1964, when she was 16. Newton-John won a talent show called Sing, Sing, Sing – the prize was a trip to England. Once there, she was offered a one-single deal with Decca Records to record her debut, Till You Say You’ll Be Mine. Shortly afterwards, she met Bruce Welch, guitarist and songwriter with The Shadows, and they became engaged in 1968.

Let's be honest: Olivia Newton-John is a show-business institution.
Blessed with a grounded, unpretentious personality, the Aussie singer probably would scoff at the notion. But she has 15 Top 10 pop hits in the States, including such memorable favorites as "I Honestly Love You," "Have You Never Been Mellow" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You." Audiences have adored her winsome personality for decades. And, come on: "Grease?"
In recent years, she has recorded thoughtful, intensely personal discs that focus on themes of healing, such as "Grace and Gratitude" and last year's "Liv On." Away from show biz, her work at Australia's Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre has proved to be a spiritually rewarding passion project.
The latter is especially close to her heart. In 1992, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She thought the disease was behind her after treatment; however, she announced in May the disease had returned and spread to her back. She is undergoing treatment as she heads out for a series of tour dates.
Newton-John, 69, cheerful and quick to laugh, called to discuss her live show, her healing process and whether she's a diva.

Question: You sing the hits in concert, but do you include any of your newer material?
Answer: We do a couple of “Liv On” songs from the album I did with Beth Nielsen Chapman and Amy Sky, but we pretty much do all the songs people would expect and like to hear.
Q: With so many hits, are there any that make you think, “Not this one again?”
A: No, not really. When I change things, it’s usually because of the running order or to change up the show a little. Some people come over and over, and you want the show to change. But the basic hits are always there.
Q: In concert, Sheena Easton jokes about how much longer she can sing her “sexy songs.” Can you relate to that with “Physical?”
A: (Laughing). Yes, I can! I sing it differently on this tour. It's a slow arrangement. The last time I was out, about a month ago, I wasn’t wanting to jump around. You have to be a little bit age appropriate, you know? But it’s a funny song, so it all works.
