EN ECOUTE

.

8 AUGUST 1980  Conceived as a cashin on the same short-lived disco craze that spawned 1979’s Roller Boogie, Xanadu stands as a legendary Hollywood misfire, derailing the movie career of Olivia Newton-john and directly inspiring the creation of the Golden Raspberry Awards.

An all-singing, all-rollerskating fantasia, it cast the Grease goddess as a genuine mythological figure: Terpsichore, one of the nine muses of Olympus, reincarnated in modern-day LA. The premise is recycled from 1947’s Rita Hayworth showcase

Down To Earth – itself a sequel to 1941 fantasy Here Comes Mr Jordan – while Gene Kelly, bizarrely enough, reprises his character from 1944’s Cover Girl.

Critics skewered it, but Xanadu’s songs escaped the wormhole of box-office disaster. Newton-john’s “Magic” was a US number one, while the enduring banger of a title song, a collaboration with ELO, topped the UK Top 40. The dream that came through a million years lived on through all the tears…

Olivia Newton-John: ‘My mum, my best friend’ from her daughter, Chloe

Oliva Newton-John’s daughter, Chloe, has shared heartbreaking memories since her mum’s tragic death from breast cancer…

Instagram/chloelattanziofficial
Chloe as a child with her mum

Her death on Monday 8 August, aged 73, rocked the showbiz world. And one of the first celebrities to pay tribute to Olivia Newton-John was her Grease co-star John Travolta, who wrote: ‘My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better… We will see you down the road and we will all be together again… Your Danny, your John!’

But it was the tribute of Olivia Newton-John’s grieving daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, to her beloved mother – who had seen her through so much – that was the most moving.

The British-Australian icon passed away peacefully at her southern Californian ranch surrounded by family and friends, including husband John Easterling, following a 30-year battle with breast cancer.

Daughter Chloe, 36, a singer and Olivia’s only child with ex-husband Matt Lattanzi, had uploaded a beautiful snap of herself and Olivia in matching white outfits just days before, with the caption: ‘I worship this woman. My mother. My best friend. @therealonj.’

And hours after her passing, Chloe returned to Instagram to share a gallery of childhood family photos.

The first was a black-andwhite photo of little Chloe kissing her mother during a photo shoot. Another showed Olivia cuddling a baby Chloe, and another saw the pair attend a charity event when Chloe was a pre-teen.

During the pandemic, Chloe moved in with Olivia and her husband in LA, which Olivia described as ‘a dream time’.

Their bond was special, and Olivia supported her daughter through depression, drug addiction, anorexia and body dysmorphia.

Indeed, Olivia – at the time battling the recurrence of her breast cancer – broke down when Chloe revealed she’d finally rediscovered her ‘self-worth’ in an emotional 2020 interview. Speaking of her initial diagnosis, Olivia revealed in an interview that despite the ‘terror’, she was determined to be strong for her daughter. ‘I had to believe I was going to be OK, for her,’ she said.

In one of her final interviews, Olivia appeared on the A Life of Greatness podcast a year ago revealing a pact she made with God, while pregnant back in the Eighties.

‘I was pregnant with Chloe, and close to losing her. I went to bed and asked God to save her and if he did, I would say the Lord’s Prayer every night for the rest of my life, and so I have.’

Chloe was equally devoted to her mum after Olivia’s breast cancer returned at stage 4 and metastasised to her lower back in 2017, following two other private struggles with the disease, in 1992 and 2013. ‘My mom is so powerful she will beat this in no time.’

Sadly, it was, ultimately, not to be. But Olivia’s spirit will live on in brave Chloe, who as her beautiful mother said, is blessed with ‘power and grace’.

Remembering Olivia Newton-John…

She brought us Sandy from Grease and the absolute ‘80s bop that is Physical. Sadly, Olivia Newton-John passed away on 8 August after a 30-year battle with cancer. Social media has been awash with tributes to the Australian actress, singer and activist from friends and fans, including her co-star John Travolta. He signed off his heartfelt post with, “Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever. Your Danny, your John”, while fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue called Olivia, “An inspiration in so many, many ways”.

Magical milestones

Dame Olivia NewtonJohn was not only a talented performer but had a gift for reinventing herself. She went from country star to a pop princess and film icon, then a fierce humanitarian and health campaigner. Here’s a look at her many achievements.

1948

Olivia Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England. Her dad Bryn was a former

MI5 officer and her mum

Irene was the daughter of Nobel Prize-winning German physicist Max Born. The family emigrated to Melbourne in 1954.

1965

After singing on variety TV shows, where she was known as “Lovely Livvy”, Olivia won a talent show, where the prize was a trip to the UK. There she recorded a song but it failed to chart.

1966

Olivia travelled around Europe with an Australian friend, Pat Carroll, performing as a duo. Pat’s visa ran out and she returned to Australia, but Olivia stayed on, working on her solo career.

1971

Olivia released her first solo album, If Not For You, and had hits with the title track and its follow-up Banks of the Ohio. In 1973, her single Let Me Be There was a hit on the pop and country music charts, and won her a Grammy for Best Country Female.

1974

Representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, Olivia came fourth behind winners ABBA. Later that year, her single I Honestly Love You became a worldwide smash, including going to number one in the US and winning her two more Grammys. After a run of hits, such as Please Mr Please, her career stalled in 1977.

1978

Grease hit the big screen and quickly became one of the most successful movies of all time.

1980

Her next movie, musical fantasy Xanadu, was a boxoffice flop but later became a cult classic. Olivia began a romance with dancer Matt Lattanzi after meeting on set.

1981

Olivia released her album Physical. The provocative lyrics prompted some radio stations to ban it. Olivia countered this by filming a spoof exercisethemed video that turned it into an aerobics anthem and popularised headbands as a fashion accessory.

1984

Olivia married Matt. After a series of miscarriages, their daughter Chloe was born in 1986. Subsequent albums failed to achieve the success of her earlier ones and she began to focus more on humanitarian causes close to her heart, such as animal rights.

1992

Olivia was primed for a comeback with the release of a greatest hits compilation album when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, aged 44. Her dad died the same weekend she got the news. She recovered after treatment, becoming an advocate for breast cancer research.

1995

Olivia’s marriage to Matt ended. A year later, she met cameraman Patrick McDermott, and they dated

on and off for nine years. A year after breaking up, Patrick disappeared while on a fishing trip.

2008

Olivia married American businessman John Easterling, who runs a herb company, in a secret

Incan ceremony in Peru. In the same year, she opened the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Research Centre in Melbourne. As well as providing treatment for cancer patients, it funds research into treatments and cures for the disease.

2017

Olivia revealed that her cancer had returned. She campaigned for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis to ease pain and set up the Olivia Newton-John Foundation to research holistic therapies for cancer. In 2020, she was made a Dame for her services to the entertainment industry and cancer campaigning.

2022

John announced that his wife, Olivia Newton-John, died peacefully on August 8. She was 73.
