 Au cours des dernières années, Olivia Newton-John a passé plus de temps dans son ranch californien. Pour l’actrice et pop star née en Angleterre et élevée en Australie, c’était un havre de paix bienvenu d’une vie passée à parcourir le monde. « Le simple fait d’avoir une journée où je n’ai pas besoin d’être quelque part a été si incroyable pour moi », a-t-elle déclaré à Closer en 2019. « Je peux m’asseoir et regarder les oiseaux toute la journée. »

Olivia, décédée le 8 août à l’âge de 73 ans, après une bataille de 30 ans contre le cancer du sein, n’a jamais perdu le charme optimiste et ensoleillé qui a fait que le monde est tombé amoureux d’elle dans les années 1970. En fait, Olivia a estimé que son attitude positive était une arme puissante dans sa guerre contre le cancer. « Je pense que lorsque vous avez le diagnostic de cancer, cela vous rend plus reconnaissant pour chaque jour », a-t-elle déclaré. « Cela vous rend plus conscient et plus reconnaissant, donc cela a été une bénédiction à bien des égards. »

Olivia, qui a déménagé avec sa famille en Australie à l’âge de 6 ans, a commencé à chanter dès l’adolescence. Elle a déménagé aux États-Unis sur les conseils d’une autre chanteuse australienne, Helen Reddy. « Elle m’a dit : » Chérie, si tu veux y arriver ici, tu dois déménager ici « , se souvient Olivia, qui a ajouté que l’interprète de « I Am Woman » l’avait également présentée au producteur qui la mettrait un jour dans le film Grease.

Mais d’abord, il y a eu de gros hauts et de bas. La comédie musicale de 1970 Toomorrow, mettant en vedette Olivia dans le rôle de la chanteuse principale d’un groupe d’un autre monde, était présentée comme la prochaine grande chose, mais a fait un flop au box-office. « Il y avait beaucoup de hoopla. Après cela, j’ai toujours été réservée à l’idée d’être trop excitée par un projet », a déclaré Olivia.

Elle s’en sort mieux en tant qu’artiste solo, marquant des succès n ° 1 avec « I Honestly Love You » en 1974 et « Have you Never Been Mellow » puis « Please Mr. Please » l’année suivante. 

Le premier succès a valu à Olivia deux de ses quatre Grammy Awards en carrière.

Elle n'était pas très chaude au moment où on lui a offert le rôle de Sandy, une étudiante innocente transférée dans la comédie musicale Grease de 1978 – et Olivia n’a presque pas accepté le rôle. Alors âgée de 29 ans, elle craignait d’avoir l’air ridicule en essayant de jouer une adolescente. Ce n’est qu’après avoir vu l’alchimie entre elle et sa co-star John Travolta lors d’un test à l’écran, à sa demande,  qu’elle a finalement signé. « Nous n’avions pas de grandes attentes », a admis Olivia, qui a été aussi surprise que quiconque quand elle est devenue l’une des comédies musicales les plus populaires de l’histoire du cinéma. « Ce n’est qu’un de ces films. Je suis très chanceuse d’en avoir fait partie. »

Olivia a noté que sa métamorphose cinématographique dans Grease de la douce Sandy à une vixen vêtue d’élasthanne a contribué à inaugurer une toute nouvelle phase de sa carrière. « J’ai pu étendre ma musique à un peu plus de rock grâce à Sandy 2, comme je l’appelle », a déclaré Olivia, dont les succès ultérieurs incluent « A Little More Love », « Physical » et « Magic ».

Sur le plan personnel, Olivia a épousé l’acteur Matt Lattanzi, qu’elle a rencontré sur le tournage de Xanadu en 1979. Leur fille, Chloe Lattanzi, est née 7 ans plus tard, mais le mariage a pris fin en 1995. « Je ne m’attarde pas sur les regrets, et je n’en parle pas parce que cela leur donne la vie », a déclaré Olivia à propos de ses chagrins d’amour. « Je les considère comme des expériences d’apprentissage. »

Il y a eu aussi d’autres chagrins. Son petit ami de longue date, Patrick McDermott, a disparu en 2005 lors d’un voyage de pêche en haute mer et n’a jamais été retrouvé. « C’est très difficile de vivre avec ça », a déclaré Olivia, qui a également perdu sa sœur et sa « meilleure amie » Rona d’un cancer en 2013.

Diagnostiquée elle-même d’un cancer du sein en 1992, Olivia est devenue une ardente défenseure de la recherche et des thérapies alternatives. En 2012, elle a prêté son nom au Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre à Melbourne, en Australie. Elle a également créé une fondation en son nom dédiée à la recherche de traitements à base de plantes pour les maladies chroniques. « J’aimerais voir le monde au-delà du cancer », a déclaré Olivia, qui, après son traitement initial contre le cancer dans les années 1990, a connu deux récidives de la maladie. « Je pense que j’ai accompli tout ce dont je rêvais et plus encore, et je suis tellement reconnaissante pour cela », a-t-elle déclaré à propos de sa longue carrière. « Maintenant, je veux être en mesure de redonner et d’aider d’autres personnes qui traversent le cancer. »

En 2008, Olivia a épousé John Easterling, nutritionniste et fondateur de l’Amazon Herb Company. « J’ai un mari incroyable et une merveilleuse équipe de soutien », a-t-elle déclaré. Au fur et à mesure que son cancer progressait, Olivia a déclaré qu’elle avait trouvé un soulagement de la douleur et de l’inconfort des teintures infusées au cannabis que John lui avait préparées. « C’est un être humain gentil et compatissant. Magnifique à regarder, amusant et très apaisant.

Olivia a également entretenu une relation chaleureuse avec sa fille, Chloé, qui a suivi ses traces en tant que chanteuse. « Je l’aime et elle m’aime », dit Olivia. « Je pense qu’elle est ma plus grande réalisation. »

Olivia avait tenu bon, mais sa famille s’est inquiétée de son état cet été. « Elle n’a pas pu marcher pendant un certain temps, et ce fut un énorme revers », dit un ami de la famille. « Elle souffrait vers la fin. »

La nièce de la  chanteuse, Tottie Goldsmith, a admis que la famille était préparée au pire. « Ce n’est pas seulement le cancer qui l’a attrapée; c’était d’autres complications... Elle a eu des infections secondaires », dit Tottie. « Elle était vraiment maigre et malade, et je lui ai dit : 'As-tu peur de mourir ?' et elle m’a dit : 'Je n’ai pas peur. J’ai fait plus dans ma vie que je n’aurais jamais pu l’imaginer. »

Dans ses dernières interviews avec Closer, Olivia, qui était une "amie" de longue date du magazine, a juré de faire en sorte que le temps qu’il lui restait compte. « Vous continuez à prétendre que rien ne va vous obtenir, mais quelque chose va m’attraper - c’est la vie », a-t-elle déclaré. « J’ai mes moments de peur, mais c’est humain et normal. Je me retire et j’essaie de vivre dans l’instant présent parce que le moment est tout ce que nous avons. »

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN She Never Lost Faith THE BELOVED SINGER AND ACTRESS REFUSED TO LET LIFE’S CHALLENGES STAND IN HER WAY Closer Weekly 29 Aug 2022

Over the past few years, Olivia Newton-John spent more time at her California ranch. For the England-born, Australianreared actress and pop star, it was a welcome haven from a life spent traveling the globe. “Just having a day where I don’t have to be somewhere has been so amazing to me,” she told Closer in 2019. “I can sit and watch the birds all day.” Olivia, who passed away on Aug. 8 at age 73 after a 30year battle with breast cancer, never lost the optimistic, sunny charm that made the world fall in love with her in the 1970s. In fact, Olivia felt her positive outlook was a potent weapon in her war on cancer. “I think when you have the cancer diagnosis, it just makes you more grateful for every day,” she said. “It makes you more aware and more grateful, so it’s been a blessing in many ways.”

NEVER BEEN MELLOW

Olivia, who moved with her family to Australia at age 6, began singing as a teenager. She relocated to the United States on the advice of another Aussie singer, Helen Reddy. “She said, ‘Darling, if you want to make it here, you have to move here,’” recalled Olivia, who added that the “I Am Woman” singer also introduced her to the producer who would one day put her in the film Grease.

But first, there were big upsed and- towns. The 1970 musical Toomorrow, starring Olivia as the lead singer of an other-worldly band, was being toutas the next big thing, but flopped at the box office. “There was a lot of hoopla. After that, I have always been reserved about getting too excited about a project,” said Olivia.

She fared better as a solo artist, scoring No. 1 hits with “I Honestly Love You” in 1974 and “Have you Never Been Mellow” and “Please Mr. Please” the following year. The first hit won Olivia two of her four career Grammy Awards.

Her hot streak had cooled a bit by the time she was offered the role of innocent transfer student Sandy in the 1978 musical Grease — and Olivia almost didn’t accept the part. Then 29, she worried that she would look ridiculous trying to play a teenager. It was only after seeing the chemistry between herself and co-star John Travolta in a screen test that she finally signed on. “We didn’t have any great expectations,” admitted Olivia, who was as surprised as anyone when it became one of the most popular musicals in film history. “It’s just one of those movies. I’m very lucky to have been a part of it.”

Olivia noted that her movie metamorphosis in Grease from sweet Sandy to a spandex-clad vixen helped usher in a whole new phase of her career. “I was able to expand my music to a bit more rock because of Sandy 2, as I call her,” said Olivia, whose later hits include “A Little More Love,” “Physical” and “Magic.”

On the personal front, Olivia wed actor Matt Lattanzi, whom she met on the set of Xanadu in 1984. Their daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, was born two years later, but the marriage ended in 1995. “I don’t dwell on regrets, and I don’t talk about them because it gives them life,” Olivia said of her heartbreaks. “I think of them as learning experiences.”

There were other sorrows, too. Her longtime boyfriend Patrick McDermott disappeared in 2005 during a deep sea fishing trip and was never found. “It’s very hard to live with that,” said Olivia, who also lost her sister and “best friend” Rona to cancer in 2013.

A LASTING LEGACY

Diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 1992, Olivia became a vocal advocate for research and alternative therapies. In 2012, she lent her name to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. She also created a foundation in her name dedicated to researching plant-based treatments for chronic illnesses. “I’d like to see the world beyond cancer,” said Olivia, who after her initial cancer treatment in the 1990s experienced two recurrences of the disease. “I think I’ve accomplished everything I dreamt of and more, and I’m so grateful for that,” she said of her long career. “Now, I want to be able to give back and help other people going through cancer.”

In 2008, Olivia married John Easterling, a nutritionist and the founder of the Amazon Herb Company. “I have an amazing husband and a wonderful support team,” she gushed. As her cancer progressed, Olivia said she found relief from pain and discomfort from the cannabis-infused tinctures John prepared for her. “He’s a kind and compassionate human being. Gorgeous to look at, fun and very calming.”

Olivia also maintained a warm relationship with her daughter, Chloe, who followed in her footsteps as a singer. “I love her, and she loves me,” said Olivia. “I think she is my biggest accomplishment.”

Olivia had been holding strong, but her family became concerned about her condition this summer. “She wasn’t able to walk for a while, and that was a huge setback,” says a family friend. “She was in pain near the end.”

The singer’s niece, Tottie Goldsmith, admitted the family was prepared for the worst. “It wasn’t just the cancer that got her; it was other complications.... She got secondary infections,” Tottie says. “She was really skinny and unwell, and I said to her, ‘Are you afraid of dying?’ and she said, ‘I’m not afraid. I’ve done more in my life than I could have ever imagined.’”

In her last interviews with Closer, Olivia, who had been a longtime friend of the magazine, vowed to make whatever time she had left count. “You keep pretending that nothing is going to get you, but something is going to get me — that’s life,” she said. “I have my moments of fear, but that’s human and normal. I pull myself back and try and live in the moment, because the moment is all we have.”

Beloved performer Olivia Newton-John dishes on fame, family and why every day is a blessing.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role of Sandy in 1978’s Grease, but Olivia Newton-John almost turned the movie down. 

At 29, she felt she might look ridiculous trying to pass for a high school student in the musical. “I was very anxious about making another film, because my music career was going well and I did not want to mess it up by doing another movie that wasn’t good,” she explains. But audiences gave all the “kids” — some of whom were older than Olivia! — of Rydell High a pass. 

The movie became a modern classic, and Olivia went from a Grammywinning singer to pop culture icon.

In more recent years, Olivia, 72, has also become an inspiration. First diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, she’s gone through three courses of treatment over the years and calls herself a cancer “thriver.” The star lends her name to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia. “I’m very excited to fund research,” Olivia tells Closer, “to look into treating people in a kinder way.”

How did you spend the past year?

Mainly I’ve been at home in California. We’re Florida residents, but we were stuck in California — if you can call it that. It was unusual for me because my whole life I feel like I’ve been on a plane or a car, traveling and living out of a suitcase. So this time has been wonderful.

You’re famous for being a big animal and nature lover.

Nature is my favorite thing. It’s very healing to watch birds. I also have miniature horses, chickens, dogs and a cat. I feel very fortunate to be in a quiet place and out of a city.

When you first started out, who were the women in show business you looked up to?

It’s sad because she just passed recently, but Helen Reddy encouraged me to come to America. I went to see her in concert in Florida when she was at the height of her career. She said, ‘If you want to make it here, darling, you need to move here.’ So I took her advice, and we stayed friends. She actually invited me to a dinner party with [film producer] Allan Carr, and that’s really how Grease came about.

Wow, that worked out!

Yes. Helen inspired me a lot. I also always loved Doris Day when I was young. I still love Joan Baez, Dionne Warwick, gosh, so many women.

Did you ever meet Doris?

Yes! I met her backstage at an Elvis concert in Las Vegas. We were waiting for him in the dressing room — he got called away. She was a delightful woman. I really admired her [career] and what she did with animal charities too.

What are your favorite memories of filming Grease?

Fun! It was a lot of fun, like going to a school I never attended. I went to a very strict, uniform-wearing school, with boys on one end of the stairwell and girls on the other. It was not like Rydell!

Are you amazed at the longevity of the movie?

It’s really amazing. I’m very grateful to be part of a movie that is still loved. Who would have ever dreamt it 40-plus years later?

Do you still stay in touch with the cast?

We do stay in touch. There is an e-mail chain with a bunch of us. John [Travolta] and I have done meet-and-greets.

And Didi [Conn] and I are really close still. We all have a great relationship because we shared some very special times together.

Earlier this year, you released a duet with your daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, called “Window in the Wall.” What was that experience like?

Chloe lives in Portland, Ore., so I don’t see her very often, but one of the gifts of this pandemic has been being able to spend time with her. So it was wonderful to have the opportunity to be together, hang out and do a song together.

She is 35 now. 

How has your mother-daughter relationship evolved over the years?

We went through all the normal stuff that all children go through with their parents. Now she’s an adult, so we can discuss things as adults. We have wonderful times together.

What was your reaction to Chloe following in your footsteps into music? Were you hesitant?

No, because she’s had a beautiful voice since she was little. I’ve had such an amazing time in this business that it would be weird for me to say don’t do it.

Why did you launch the Olivia NewtonJohn Foundation?

After having lived for years with different cancers, and having surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, I though it would be wonderful if we could find different kinds of treatments for people going through cancer. I’ve been lucky enough to be married to an amazing man, “Amazon” John [Easterling], who’s a plant medicine man. So I’ve taken a lot of plant medicine over the last years and have done well. We want to raise money to fund the studies on plant medicine.

What has seemed to help you the most?

There are a lot of herbs I take. And over the last 10 years, I’ve used cannabis. My husband makes me tinctures that help me immensely with pain, inflammation, sleep and anxiety. I’d like to research all that and find out what else is going on because I feel good.

That’s wonderful.

I’d also been eating vegan because my daughter was visiting me and she’s a vegan. I feel very good. I try to do something for myself every day that I love, like seeing my horses or sitting in the garden.

What would you still like to accomplish?

I’d like to see a world beyond cancer. I think I’ve accomplished everything I dreamt of and more, and I’m so grateful for that. I want to be able to give back and help other people going through cancer. I don’t think it can get more important than that.
