Olivia Newton-John Classic Hits, ‘Grease’ & ‘Xanadu’ Soundtracks Surge Following Legend’s Passing
Fans are celebrating the music of Olivia Newton-John — who died Aug. 8 at age 73 after a long battle with cancer — as the legend ranks at 12 spots on Billboard‘s latest Digital Song Sales chart, dated Aug. 20.
“Hopelessly Devoted to You” leads her total, new at No. 5 on Digital Song Sales with 5,000 downloads sold in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 11, up from a nominal sum, according to Luminate. The ballad reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978.
The beloved singer-actress achieved five Hot 100 No. 1s, among 15 top 10s between 1974 and 1984. She also notched two No. 1s, among five top 10s, on the Billboard 200 albums chart: If You Love Me Let Me Know (1974) and Have You Never Been Mellow (1975).

During the Aug. 5-11 tracking week, Newton-John’s U.S. song sales (for titles on which she boasts lead billing) soared by 6,078% to 47,000 (from 800 the week before), while official on-demand U.S. streams of her songs vaulted by 615% to 10.2 million (from 1.6 million).
“You’re the One That I Want” was Newton-John’s most-streamed song in the U.S. in the tracking week, up 134% to 1.9 million official on-demand streams. “Devoted” followed with 1.8 million streams, up 328%.
“Devoted” concurrently crowns the Country Digital Song Sales chart, marking Newton-John’s first leader on the list (which began in 2010). The single hit No. 20 on Hot Country Songs in 1978, while she scored seven top 10s on the chart, in 1973-76. She also posted three No. 1s among nine top 10s on Top Country Albums, through the No. 9-peaking Back With a Heart in 1998.
Meanwhile, the Grease soundtrack re-enters Billboard‘s Soundtracks chart at No. 5 (9,000 equivalent album units, up 1,286%) and the Xanadu soundtrack debuts at No. 18 (4,000, up 7,863%). Newton-John starred in the respective 1978 and 1980 films, with the former including “Summer,” “Devoted” and “Want,” among other favorites, and the latter housing “Magic” and the title track.
