In 1968, the actress started dating English guitarist, songwriter and producer Bruce Welch.
The 80-year-old from Bognor Regis, Sussex, was a founding member of the British rock group The Shadows, who served as the backing bang for Cliff Richard from 1958 to 1968.
They have had 69 UK chart singles from the 1950s to the 2000s, 34 of which are credited to Cliff Richard and the Shadows.
Olivia met the British rock legend in 1968 whilst she was performing as a support act for The Shadows on their tour, long before being cast in Grease.
In an interview with The Mirror in 2019, he recalled the moment they met, saying: “She was absolutely stunning.”
“She was 17 and was the support act when we did a week in Bournemouth,” he explained.
The couple instantly hit it off and soon became engaged. They were together for five years, but never actually made it down the aisle.
As reported by Marie Claire, Olivia broke off the engagement in 1972 and moved later to Los Angeles for a career in Hollywood, and the guitarist was devastated.
The musician reportedly attempted suicide and was lucky to survive, saying in an interview in 2004: “I told everyone that I was going away for the weekend and not to bother calling me, but I forgot about the window cleaner.”
“He found me on the Tuesday… I had taken the pills on the Sunday,” he continued.
However, Bruce’s love for the singer and actress never died and they stayed on good terms.
He told The Mirror in 2019: “She’ll always be Livvy to me.”
Speaking about her Damehood, he added: “I’m thrilled for her. As a mere OBE myself, I will have to doff my cap, touch my forelock, and bow next time I see her. Maybe I’ll learn to curtsy.”
He also said that he admired her “positivity” when she was ill. “Her attitude is always, ‘I’m gonna get through this’,” he said.
“If she has friends who are ill, her positivity bounces off them as well.”
