Independent music publishing is on an upward trajectory. The Independent Music Publishers International Forum (IMPF) recently released a report, “Independent Music Publishing Global Market View 2020,” showing that estimated global music publishing revenue generated by music publishers (excluding authors’ shares) rose from EUR $4.54 billion in 2017 to EUR $4.63 billion in 2018 and EUR $5 billion in 2019 with North America, Europe and Japan leading the growth curve.
While this year’s numbers are yet to be discovered, indie music publishers are already doubling down on their adaptability and niche offerings that have proven successful during the pandemic and are positioning them for success in 2021.
“It’s horrible what’s going on in the world with the virus, but this was a phenomenal year for us from a company and growth perspective,” says Lawrence Mestel, founder and CEO of Primary Wave Music independent publishing company for iconic artists like Bob Marley, Prince and Whitney Houston. “This year alone, we’ve closed 22 acquisitions, and we still have about five or six to go in the next four days.” .......
..............Another partnership this year was with four-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and actress Olivia Newton-John who has sold more than 100 million albums and is best known for her Oscar-nominated hit “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”
Despite her success thus far, the artist recognizes the value of music publishing and is now working to expand her brand to wider audiences.
“I’ve been so blessed throughout my career to have worked with some of the greatest songwriters and producers who have helped me achieve my musical successes through the years,” Newton-John said in a statement. “I’m excited about this partnership with Primary Wave as it will not only help introduce my music to new generations but, it will also allow us to create wonderful projects and opportunities for my longtime fans to enjoy all over again in new ways – whilst also bringing new music to them at the same time!”

Malgré son succès jusqu’à présent, l’artiste reconnaît la valeur de l’édition musicale et travaille maintenant à étendre son œuvre à un public plus large.
« J’ai été tellement bénie tout au long de ma carrière d’avoir travaillé avec certains des plus grands auteurs-compositeurs et producteurs qui m’ont aidé à atteindre mes succès musicaux au fil des ans, a déclaré Newton-John dans un communiqué. « Je suis enthousiaste à l’idée de ce partenariat avec Primary Wave, car il contribuera non seulement à présenter ma musique aux nouvelles générations, mais aussi à créer de merveilleux projets et opportunités pour mes fans de longue date de profiter à nouveau de nouvelles façons – tout en leur apportant de la nouvelle musique en même temps! »
2021 c'est 2 anniversaires : Les 50 ans du 45t IF NOT FOR YOU ainsi que du premier album d'ONJ et PHYSICAL célèbre ses 40 ans ... maintenant on est aussi tellement habitué à ce qu'il ne se passe pas grand chose ... qui vivra verra !
