La famille d’Olivia Newton-John a tenu un service commémoratif « très privé » un mois après la mort de la star de « Grease »

Dire au revoir. Olivia Newton-John a été pleurée par ses proches lors d’un service commémoratif privé après sa mort d’un cancer du sein à l’âge de 73 ans, confirme en exclusivité Us Weekly.

« Il y a eu une petite réunion de famille très privée en Californie la semaine dernière pour célébrer Olivia », nous a déclaré un représentant des proches de Newton-John. « La famille préfère garder les détails de l’événement privé pour le moment. »

Le mari de la star de Xanadu, John Easterling, a annoncé sa mort via les médias sociaux le lundi 8 août, écrivant: « Dame Olivia Newton-John (73 ans) est décédée paisiblement dans son ranch dans le sud de la Californie ce matin, entourée de sa famille et de ses amis. Nous demandons à tout le monde de respecter la vie privée de la famille pendant cette période très difficile. »

Il a poursuivi : « Olivia est un symbole de triomphes et d’espoir depuis plus de 30 ans en partageant son parcours avec le cancer du sein. Son inspiration curative et son expérience pionnière en matière de médecine végétale se poursuivent avec le Fonds de la Fondation Olivia Newton-John, dédié à la recherche sur la médecine végétale et le cancer.

Avec Easterling, Newton-John laisse dans le deuil sa fille, Chloe Lattanzi, qu’elle partage avec son ex-mari Matt Lattanzi. Alors que sa mort faisait la une des journaux, les fans ont partagé leurs souvenirs préférés de la défunte australienne, y compris sa costar de Grease, John Travolta.

« Ma très chère Olivia, tu as rendu toutes nos vies tellement meilleures. Votre impact a été incroyable », a écrit l’acteur de Saturday Night Fever, 68 ans, via Instagram juste après l’annonce de sa mort. « Je t’aime tellement. Australians stuck at home because of COVID-19 lockdowns spent $8.6 million last year buying rare records from one website alone as the rise of physical music continues. 

US website Discogs is used by sellers and collectors to gauge the market value of vinyl, CD and cassettes, as well becoming an increasingly popular global marketplace. 

Short for discographies, last year over 34,000 Australian buyers made just under 200,000 orders worth $8.6 million in sales from Discogs, up from $5 million in 2019. However, many still prefer the hands-on approach with record stores across Australia reporting a boom in sales, with even teenagers now discovering the joy of vinyl and older music lovers renewing their vinyl habit. Dave Lang, from Melbourne’s Round And Round Records, said AC/DC remain the most collectable Australian artist. 

Local pressings of Bon Scott-era AC/DC albums, with a blue kangaroo logo, are highly sought-after by collectors. “Albums like TNT and Powerage in really good condition will get you around $250,” Lang said. 

Lang said certain Australian progressive rock, funk, jazz and punk records on vinyl can sell for up to $3000. Round And Round had a vinyl test pressing of the late Rowland S Howard’s 1999 album Teenage Snuff Film priced at $900. “We had it on the wall in the store but it didn’t sell,” Lang said. “Who do you get to buy a $900 record? I know (US musician) Henry Rollins collects test pressings and loves Rowland S Howard. 

I got his email, he said if we paid for the shipping he’d give us $900. And he did. That’s the thing with expensive records, you have to find that one person who is going to pay big money for them.” Record stores regularly buy unwanted vinyl, with some not realising the value of what they might have gathering dust. Paul Kelly’s discontinued Talk and Manila albums in good condition will fetch over $100, while Pat Monaghan of Melbourne’s Rocksteady Records says there’s always demand for vinyl by alternative acts the Go-betweens, The Triffids, the Laughing Clowns, the Dirty Three and Nick Cave’s first band The Birthday Party. 

 “Those underground bands have become quite sought after,” Monaghan said. “But I’m more about making interesting records available and affordable for a wide range of people. Personally I don’t think these days you can have a record sitting on your shelves for $650 just waiting for someone to walk in and buy it.” The ongoing vinyl revival has also seen teenagers embrace the format. “There are lots of people from 14 and 15 up who come into the store every Saturday,” Monaghan said. “They’re buying their favourite contemporary artists like Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Courtney Barnett and also buying Radiohead’s back catalogue. “There are people picking their favourite albums from their Spotify playlists and then they want to own it on vinyl. Lots of people buying lots of different things lots of the time.”

Olivia Newton-John knows that better than most after collaborating for the second time on a song with daughter Chloe Lattanzi. “Window in the Wall” is about ending hate and uniting all — a very timely message. “The moment that I heard it, it really touched my heart and made me cry,” the icon says. “I thought, I really need to record this song.”

Although Lattanzi has worked with her mom before — and the Grease actress has been in the spotlight for decades — there were still nerves. “When we went into the studio for the first take, I broke down and I said, ‘Mom, I’m so sorry, but I need you to leave.’ I was so nervous to sing in front of her,” admits Lattanzi. “I have severe stage fright.” It’s something that Newton-John can relate to: “I was always nervous before [a] show,” she says. “It took me forever to get [over] it.”

OLIVIA Newton-John’s daughter Chloe Lattanzi has denied being an antivaxxer, but has questioned the content of most vaccines. Lattanzi has been called out on Instagram for sharing information slamming vaccines, masks and lockdowns.

“I’m not an anti-vaxxer, I’m anti putting mercury and pesticides in my body, which are in a lot of vaccines,” Lattanzi, who was on last year’s Dancing With the Stars, said.

“I’ve watched natural medicine heal my mother and make her feel vibrant and healthy with stage four cancer, I wouldn’t even say she has stage four (any more). To me, real medicine is what comes from the earth. I think people trust vaccines because the doctor says it is safe, I used to.

“But now I’ve done research into things, I don’t believe that to be the case.

“I understand why we have vaccines but I think people should research what’s in them. I’m not an anti-vaxxer, but if I had a chance to take herbs and plants as a baby rather than have toxins injected into me, I would have done that.”

Lattanzi, who runs a medicinal cannabis farm in Oregon, is currently staying with her mother and the singing legend’s husband John Easterling on their Santa Barbara ranch, two hours from Los Angeles.

Newton-John, who says she takes “precautions” including wearing masks while shopping, said she had no plans to take a COVID-19 vaccine.

“Not at this point, no,” the 72-year-old said.

“I feel really good, really well, I take a lot of supplements and the cannabis my husband grows for me, he studies which strains work best for cancer. Cannabis doesn’t kill you, it heals you. It’s only in the last 100 or so years it was made out to be evil.”

Lattanzi said the focus on painkillers over natural medicine confounded her.

“People will look at synthetic chemicals as medicine. They’re not medicine to me, they mask symptoms, whereas plant medicine addresses what’s causing the symptoms.”

Newton-John is in regular contact with her family in Melbourne but unable to come home. “Australia’s done a wonderful job with the virus but we can’t come back right now,” she said. “I don’t want to risk flying, with my immune system. Even though it’s good, I’m a little compromised, so I don’t want to take chances.”
