For more than two decades, Olivia has been mourning the loss of her goddaughter

She cemented herself as one of the world’s most celebrated stars, thanks to her powerful voice and leading roles in beloved films like Grease, but these days it’s Olivia Newton-john’s brave fighting spirit that she’s most admired for.

Olivia, 71, has remained positive and optimistic about her almost three-decade-long cancer battle, but she’s no stranger to heartache. Behind the scenes, she’s bravely harboured a 28-year family secret that changed the course of her life.

In 1991 Olivia, then married to her Xanadu co-star Matt Lattanzi, suffered the loss of her beloved five-year-old goddaughter Colette Chuda from cancer. The daughter of one of Olivia’s closest friends Nancy Chuda, the little girl passed away from Wilms tumour, a rare form of kidney cancer, leaving both families devastated.

“My hands shook and I couldn’t stop crying,” Olivia revealed in her 2018 memoir Don’t Stop Believin’. “How could we live without our Colette? My heart took a long time to mend,” she said.

Earlier this month, Olivia’s daughter Chloe Lattanzi, who she shares with her ex-husband Matt, opened up about the tragedy. “My best friend dying of cancer when we were both five had me thinking about mortality at a very young age,” revealed the 34-year-old.

“This created many fears in me, but it also created a sensitive, thoughtful little girl curious about the nature of the universe.”

As if the death of her closest friend wasn’t hard enough, Chloe revealed she discovered her own mother’s cancer diagnosis at the hands of a schoolyard bully around the same time. “Some little brat ran up to me and said, ‘Ha ha, your mum’s got cancer and she’s going to die.’ It’s like a screenshot in my head I’ll never forget. I went home and said to my mum, ‘Why didn’t you tell me? I could’ve taken care of you!”

Olivia was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, and while she went into remission after eight months of treatment, the illness returned in 2013, then a third time in 2017, where it was classified as stage four.

The singer has had plenty of testing times, including the disappearance of her former partner Patrick Mcdermott in 2005 – but last week she had fans captivated when she made a rare appearance Down Under!

Holding back tears after watching Chloe wow the judges on Dancing With The Stars, she was overwhelmed with emotion. “I’m so proud and my heart is beating so fast and I’m trying not to cry,” she gushed, telling Chloe she “did a wonderful job, just gorgeous”.

The 71-year-old Grease star, who is battling stage four breast cancer, was all smiles as she held hands and cuddled d with her 34-year-old daughter, who’s starring in this year’s season of Dancing with the Stars in Australia.

After a practice session with dance partner Gustavo Viglio, the adoring mum and daughter stepped out in Melbourne looking radiant.

Chloe, who has battled depression for 15 years, has also had issues with anorexia, body dysmorphia, drug addiction and alcohol dependency, but she’s tipped to be the break-out star in the show.

“People forget that I’m a legitimate singer and musician because my depression and anxiety have overshadowed that part of me,” she recently revealed. “I want people to see me for who I am, not an illness I overcame.”

And if the first episode is anything to go by, Chloe’s wish will be granted. Her mum sat proudly in the front row to watch the triumphant performance.

“I am so proud. I’m so proud and my heart is beating so fast and I’m trying not to cry,” the actress gushed. “She did a wonderful job – just gorgeous, just gorgeous.”

Don’t Stop Believin’ was not the most successful of Olivia Newton-John’s many hits. The song spent one week at the top of the Billboard Easy Listening charts in 1976 and has been overshadowed by numbers such as I Honestly Love You, Let Me Be There and Physical.

But for Olivia, the song is currently the soundtrack to her life. In particular, a couple of lines in the chorus provide the motto that is helping her get through each day.

The words “Don’t stop believin’, you’ll get by; Bad days, bad days will hurry by,” have had special meaning since the cancer she was first diagnosed with in

1992 returned last year.

Olivia, who turns 70 on September 26, has a tumour on the base of her spine but says she’s optimistic at her chances of beating the cancer.

“I believe I will win over it,” she reveals in a TV interview. “That’s my goal.”

She also admitted that this is actually the third time she’s fought the disease. Back in 2013, the Grease actress underwent treatment for a tumour on her shoulder but decided not to tell anyone other than close family and friends.

“I thought, ‘This is not something I need to share with people. It’s my life and I want to keep it to myself.’”

That cancer was discovered after Olivia was injured in a car accident while on her way to visit her sister Rona Newton-John, who was dying of brain cancer. “The seatbelt hit me really hard and a lump came up,” she tells. “I went to see the doctor and we thought it was something to do with the accident. Time went on and it turned out to be more than that.”

Olivia turned to conventional medical treatment and natural therapies, which shrank the shoulder tumour. But now the cancer has spread to her spine and once again she’s been undergoing radiation therapy and using natural remedies. She has completely cut sugar out of her diet, which has led to huge weight loss, and is taking cannabis oil for pain.

The Grammy Award-winner counts herself fortunate that husband John Easterling (66) is the founder of the Amazon Herb Company and that they live in California.

“I am very lucky that I am living in a state where it is legal and that I have a husband who is a plant medicine man. He makes tinctures which help me with pain and sleep,” explains Olivia, who is mum to daughter Chloe Lattanzi (32).

When Olivia was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she was 44 and had just lost her dad Bryn to cancer in the same week. She underwent a partial mastectomy, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction, and also took herbal formulas, practised meditation and focused on a “vision of complete wellness.”

Pronounced cancer-free, she used her experience to help others overcome the disease by opening the Olivia NewtonJohn Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in her home city of Melbourne. It’s a centre that not only treats patients but carries out research and clinical trials.

“I believe when you go through something difficult, even something as dramatic as cancer, that something positive will come of it,” Olivia says.

“That’s exactly what the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre is – a positive healing centre to support people on their cancer journey. I have been introducing wellness programmes in a cancer hospital environment to patients who go there to the kind of therapies I was able to have access to but most people can’t afford.”

Her dream is for cancer to one day become a “thing of the past”, but unfortunately for Olivia, who also owns Gaia, an Australian spa and health retreat, it is now very much a part of her present. When she began suffering back pains last year, she thought she had sciatica. For months, she put up with pain so bad that sometimes she struggled to walk.
“It didn’t occur to me that it could be the return of the cancer until a year went by and I was still in excruciating pain. I had an MRI and we found out it was in there,” she recalls.

Olivia, who is releasing a memoir called Don’t Stop Believin’, says she would be lying if she said she never gets scared about her future now the cancer has returned. “There are moments; I’m human,” she confesses.

But she stops herself from doing that by “having a focus on other things and not thinking about myself all the time. There are other people out there doing much worse than me. I am a very privileged person and I am aware of that. I am one of millions on this journey, and I see it as part of my mission. I’m still treating it naturally and doing really well.”

La chanson a d'abord été proposée aux Backstreet Boys pour une éventuelle inclusion dans l'un de leurs albums à venir. Bien que Backstreet Boys ait enregistré la chanson en studio elle n'est pas apparue dans un de leurs albums.

Darren Hayes a ensuite offert la chanson à Olivia Newton-John , alors qu'il avait un accord contractuel avec son management pour lui fournir des chansons. Elle a accepté d'utiliser la chanson et l'a incluse dans son album de duos qu'elle planifiait (2) en 2002, invitant Hayes à l'enregistrer avec elle.

THOUSANDS JOIN OLIVIA’S WELLNESS WALK FOR CANCER

Legendary Aussie entertainer Olivia Newton-John (68) and her husband John Easterling (64) looked a picture of happiness as they walked together in the annual Olivia Newton-John Wellness Walk and Research Run, to raise money for the Grease star’s research centre in Melbourne.
Despite her radiant appearance, Olivia revealed in May that her breast cancer had returned and metastasised to the sacrum, a bone near the base of the spine.
A crowd of supporters joined the Physical singer, including Aussie Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who pledged $20 million should the Australian Labor Party win the next election. Olivia was all smiles at the event, but was overcome with emotion when she was presented with a cheque for $250,000 from generous donors.
Olivia is also in favour of medicinal marijuana. “It’s a healing plant with wonderful properties,” she says. She wants Australia to follow California’s lead in legalising medicinal use of the drug.

Après Sharon Jones, disparue en novembre dernier, c'est un autre grand ambassadeur de la soul qui nous quitte. Le chanteur américain Charles Bradley est mort samedi 23 septembre à 68 ans d'un cancer, a annoncé son agent.

Né en Floride, dans le sud-est des Etats-Unis, Charles Bradley grandit à New York où il découvre le « parrain » de la soul James Brown au légendaire Apollo Theater de Harlem.

Il se lance alors dans une carrière de chanteur de reprises de son idole, allant jusqu’à copier sa garde-robe et à imiter le style de James Brown sur scène.

C’est son premier album, sorti en 2011, qui lui vaut un début de notoriété, à plus de 60 ans.
Son dernier album, Changes, sorti l’an dernier, lui a enfin permis de toucher un plus large public et a figuré sur la liste des « meilleurs albums de l’année 2016 » de nombreux magazines spécialisés.

J'adorais le personnage, sa voix puissante à la Otis Redding et sa musique Soul ....

J'espère qu'un jour on pourra éradiquer cette terrible maladie .....
