The West Australian

She played a starring role in one of the most popular movies of all time — and now Olivia NewtonJohn has received one of Australia’s highest civilian honours. The 70-year-old from Sydney will today be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).

But the Australia Day honour is not just a recognition of a performing arts career that has earned her four Grammy Awards and more than 100 million record sales. Newton-John, right, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 as she was preparing for a comeback tour. She recovered and came back stronger. Already a passionate humanitarian, she used her profile to advocate for breast cancer care and research, establishing the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Victoria in 2012.

She has continued to raise money while dealing with another two cancer diagnoses.

“To be presented with this esteemed recognition by the Governor-General fills me with gratitude and pride to be Australian,” she said.
