Olivia est le deuxième album studio d' Olivia Newton-John, sorti un 11 aout de 1972. Deux de ses chansons sont sorties en singles (« What Is Life » et « Just a Little Too Much »). L'album n’a jamais été publié aux États-Unis, seulement quatre de ses chansons ont finalement été publiées sur Let Me Be There et If You Love Me, Let Me Know.  

Olivia Newton-John reprend deux chansons de George Harrison sur cet album, « Behind That Locked Door » et « What Is Life », toutes deux tirées du premier album solo de Harrison, All Things Must Pass, publié en 1971. Parmi les autres chansons notables de l’album, citons son interprétation de Angel of the Morning de Chip Taylor, Everything I Own de David Gates, If we only have love de Jacques Brel et Changes écrit par Olivia. L’album a été, malheureusement un échec commercial lors de sa sortie au Royaume-Uni  et les 2 singles extraits n'ont pas franchement connus un franc succès. 

Cet album reste l'un de mes préférés de sa période anglaise ...

J'ai toujours rêvé d'entendre une vraie version studio en stéréo de cette reprise de BILLY JOEL ... mais je pense que ça sera dans une autre vie .. on est un peu mal barré avec son label indépendant .. et puis il y a surement des droits d'auteurs à redonner à BILLY ...

2001 Newton-john concert was nothing short of magical

 The recent death of Olivia Newton-john followed her 30-year battle with breast cancer. I had read that when cancer had first attacked her in 1992, she transformed her initial shock into a spirit of healing that empowered her to be a strong advocate for women with breast cancer. She urged them to live their lives with compassion. 

She continued that compassion when her breast cancer returned in 2013 and again in 2017. It finally took her life. 

 Newton-john was born in England and had moved to Australia as a young girl. She started performing at a young age and had many hit songs. Over the years, Newton-john was given many awards and honors, including four Grammys. They will always be her lasting legacy. But my best memory of her was when she performed at the Victoria Theatre on September 13, 2001. 

 As a part of her 30 Music Years Concert Tour, she had just performed on Sept. 10 at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami, Fla. 

The next day, suicide hijackers crashed four airliners into the Twin Towers in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, and a field in Pennsylvania, a national disaster that took the lives of almost 3,000 people. 

 In Dayton, I remember hearing fighter jets screaming skyward out of Wright-patterson Air Force Base as they patrolled the skies. No commercial planes were permitted to fly anywhere in the United States. It was a very ominous time for everyone. 

 Meanwhile, Newton-john’s tour was celebrating her many great hits, including “Summer Nights,” “You’re the One That I Want,” “Physical” and “Xanadu.” Plus, she was still riding the wave of her role as Sandy in “Grease,” a movie with an original budget of $6 million that grossed more than $400 million, and had produced one of the best-selling albums of all time. 

 She had previously committed to perform in Dayton on Sept. 13 at the Heart-to-heart Gala for the Kettering Medical Center Foundation to be held at the Victoria Theatre. 

 Conscious of her own health battles, and conscious of her commitments, she was determined to make it to her next concert. Since she could not fly, she drove from Miami to Dayton and arrived in time to perform. 

 Her performance was mesmerizing. The Victoria Theatre was sold out. I remember how thrilled I was to even be in the audience, and how especially thrilled I was to have seats close to the stage. 

 Newton-john walked out to a standing ovation for her mettle and grit in even making it to Dayton. She then opened her concert to a hushed audience as she spoke from her heart about the understanding, sympathy and respect she had for the victims of 9/11 and for all Americans. The love in her heart spewed out to the audience. It truly was a Heart-to-heart experience. 

 That concert will always be a special part of Newton-john’s legacy, as she endeared herself to the minds and hearts of our community. 

 And for that one evening, the Victoria Theatre became a very special place; a mystical place filled with awe. It was Xanadu.

IF NOT FOR YOU est le premier album solo en studio d' Olivia Newton-John, sorti en novembre 1971 chez Festival Records. 

L’album est sorti sur le label Pye International au Royaume-Uni sous le nom d’Olivia Newton-John, avec une pochette légèrement différente. 

3 chansons supplémentaires (connues) ont été enregistrées par Olivia Newton-John, mais ont été écartées pendant le processus de création de l’album : « The Biggest Clown », « It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye » et « Would You Follow Me ». 

Le premier est sorti sur le single « If Not for You », le second sur le single promo « Love Song » et plus tard sur l’album de compilation 48 Original Tracks et le troisième a été publié sur quelques pressages du single « Banks of the Ohio » et aussi sur la compilation 48 Original Tracks. 

L’album contient des reprises de Kris Kristofferson (« Me and Bobby McGee » et « Help Me Make It Through the Night »), Bread (« If »), The Band (« In a Station »), Lesley Duncan (« Love Song » et « Lullaby »), Bob Dylan (« If Not for You »), Brotherhood of Man (« Where Are You Going to My Love »), Gordon Lightfoot (« If You Could Read My Mind ») et Tom Rush ( » No regrets »). 

"Banks of the Ohio" est une chanson traditionnelle qui a été arrangée par John Farrar et Bruce Welch .

 

"If Not for You », la chanson-titre, est le premier single sorti.  La chanson a atteint la sixième place du classement anglais des meilleures ventes de 45t et la quatorzième place du classement australien Go-Set singles.  

Ce fut également un succès inattendu aux USA puisque le single a atteint la vingt-cinquième place du Billboard Hot 100 américain et la dix-huitième place du palmarès des meilleurs singles au Canada. 

Olivia est venue en France pour défendre sa chanson ! Un 45t est également sortie chez nous .. mais ce premier rendez-vous n'a pas été le bon ! 

Le single a été le premier numéro un d'Olivia Newton-John dans le classement américain Top Easy Listening . 

Le deuxième single, Banks of the Ohio, a également été un succès au Royaume-Uni (culminant à la sixième place) et au top du classement des single en Australie.

Pour promouvoir l’album et l’image de Newton-John, les singles promotionnels « If You Could Read My Mind » (avec « It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye » en face B) et « Love Song » (avec « If » en face B) sont sortis dans certains pays européens. 

Une version allemande de « Banks of the Ohio », intitulée « Unten Am Fluss, Der Ohio Heisst », a également été publiée et se retrouve dans la nouvelle version DELUXE !

Le deuxième album d'Olivia Newton-John, intitulé OLIVIA, sorti en 1972 fêtera ses 50 ans ! 

Bon le tout premier n'a pas du tout été célébré ... il est a parier que le second sera oublié de la même manière ! N'ayant pas connu de succès en Angleterre et ailleurs, ce petit bijou ne sera pas dépoussiéré par la team de notre chère tête blonde !  C'est vraiment dommage ! Je trouve que ces 2 premiers albums restent intemporels .... et ce sans doute grâce à la production efficace de John Farrar et Bruce Welch : 2 génies !  

Olivia a été magnifiquement photographié par HIPGNOSIS et elle a écrit une très jolie composition : CHANGE ! .. et quand à ses reprises .. j'ai toujours eu l'impression que ces chansons furent composées pour elle ( heu ... sauf .. IF WE ONLY HAVE LOVE qu'elle reprend divinement !)

Le 17 mai 1975, l'album HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW perd 2 petites places mais reste dans le TOP 10 du classement BILLBOARD 200 !
