‘Grease 2’ is in the pink at 40 and has improved with age

The much-maligned sequel helped launch careers and has found new fans.

If “Grease” is the word, then its scattershot sequel is a run-on sentence.

Featuring gleefully chaotic musical numbers and more abandoned storylines than “Game of Thrones,” “Grease 2” opened in theaters on June 11, 1982, with high hopes of matching the success of its 1978 predecessor starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Set in 1961, two years after Danny (Travolta) and Sandy (Newton-John) literally flew off in a souped-up car, the sequel is once again set at Rydell High School, where new Pink Ladies leader Stephanie Zinone (Michelle Pfeiffer) meets Michael Carrington (Maxwell Caulfield), an impossibly handsome British student who also is Sandy’s cousin. But when Stephanie rebuffs his advances, saying she’s holding out for a “cool rider,” Michael transforms into a masked, motorcycling hunk to win her heart.

“Grease 2” flatlined at the box office thanks in part to blistering reviews, with critics calling it a “slight” and “mostly awful” rehash of the original. As a result, Paramount scrapped plans for a third and fourth movie set during the counterculture movement.

But thanks to a lively Twitter conversation sparked by “The Big Sick” director Michael Showalter, and famous fans including Andrew Garfield and June Diane Raphael, the film has been fondly re-evaluated online in recent years, with many people insisting that “Grease 2” is better than the first movie.

“It’s an improvement on the original ‘Grease.’ It has a more fun, female-forward energy,” says writer Gwen Ihnat, who wrote a passionate defense of the sequel in 2017 for The AV Club. “The fact that Sandy changes herself completely is so much less empowering than Stephanie, who isn’t changing for anybody. She has all these guys after her and chooses who she wants to be with.”

As a self-confessed “die-hard fan” of the first movie, comedian/host Anna Roisman won’t go so far as to say “Grease 2” is superior. But she points to the second film’s wall-to-wall bops written by Louis St. Louis and choreographed by director Patricia Birch, and infectious songs such as “Cool Rider,” “Reproduction” and “Girl for All Seasons” that rival anything in the original Broadway adaptation.

“Name another movie that turns the sport of bowling into a full musical production,” Roisman says of the innuendo-filled “Score Tonight.” And with endless scenes of Rydell students auditioning for the school talent show, “(‘Grease 2’) just hits harder as a theater kid, because let’s face it, they’re all theater kids. This movie is for the nerds who needed that talent show.”

Birch has said the script was unfinished when shooting started, which may explain some of the abrupt shifts in tone and plot. Although Travolta and Newton-John don’t return for “Grease 2,” Didi Conn comes back as beauty school dropout Frenchy. Now pursuing skin care, Frenchy reenrolls at Rydell to take chemistry, only to disappear without explanation midway through the movie.

“I just love that Frenchy is still in school,” Roisman says. “She is the glue that holds this franchise together. I also think the luau is the trippiest scene in any movie, and I don’t do drugs. Scenes like that scream ‘cult following’ to me.”

“There are all these dumb little things that crack me up,” Ihnat adds, pointing to Stephanie’s zealous ketchup obsession and how Michael does all his schoolwork in his uncle’s fallout shelter. “It’s funnier (than the original). There’s a low-key charm.”

Like the first “Grease,” the sequel aimed to make big stars out of its young cast of mostly unknowns, which also included Pamela Adlon (FX’s “Better Things”) and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland’s daughter) in minor roles.

Pfeiffer, who was just 23 at the time, went on to shoot her breakthrough role in “Scarface” five months after the movie’s release. Caulfield, meanwhile, struggled to gain traction in Hollywood, and has spoken about the psychological toll it took on him to watch Pfeiffer’s fame grow so quickly in contrast.

Given the inevitable comparisons to Travolta and Newton-John, both actors “had an uphill battle, but I think they did a really great job and have this wonderful chemistry,” Ihnat says. “It’s really about enjoying Michelle’s star power. And Maxwell Caulfield? Totally missed opportunity there, America.”

R.I.P TAB HUNTER

Monsieur Stuart ( Grease 2 ) nous à quitté !

Acteur à la beauté sublime, prince du Hollywood des années 50, Tab Hunter aura passé la plus grande partie de sa carrière dans le placard avant d’assumer enfin son homosexualité. On vient d’apprendre sa disparition, ce 9 juillet.
Il avait 86 ans.

Ses cheveux couleur paille, son corps puissant et son regard bleu firent de lui l’un des jeunes premiers les plus adulés du Hollywood des années 50.

Dans l’Amérique d’après-guerre, Tab Hunter est l’un des enfants chéris de Hollywood. Archétype de la beauté masculine californienne. Il joue dans des films comme « Cette satanée Lola » (1958), « Ceux de Cordura » (1959) avec Gary Cooper et Rita Hayworth, « C’est la guerre » (1958) (avec un certain Clint Eastwood dans un petit rôle), « Une espèce de garce » de Sydney Lumet (1959) ou encore « Juge et Hors-la-loi » (1973) où il donne la réplique à Paul Newman. Tout ce qu’il touche se transforme en or. Et lorsqu’il chante, sa chanson « Young Love » atterrit directement en tête du Billboard américain.

’il rendait folles des millions admiratrices, le beau Tab gardait en lui un lourd secret : il était homosexuel. Mais dans l’Amérique des années 50, être gay est illégal. Et pour un acteur hollywoodien le placard est la seule option.

Pour protéger sa vie privée, les nababs de la Warner Bros. lui inventent des romances de façades avec les partenaires de ses films, comme Debbie Reynolds ou Natalie Wood. Mais dans les coulisses de Los Angeles, Hunter mène une double vie et connaît de folles passions avec le patineur artistique Ronnie Robertson, ou l’acteur de « Psychose » Anthony Perkins.

Dans les années 80, la carrière de l’ex-golden boy bat de l’aile. Hunter se résigne à jouer dans des films peu inspirés comme « Grease 2 ». Sa meilleure idée sera d’accepter de donner la réplique à la légendaire drag queen Divine dans le génial « Polyester » de John Waters.



En 2005, avec l’aide de l’écrivain Eddie Miller, Hunter décide de raconter sa vérité dans une autobiographie passionnante, « Tab Hunter Confidential, The Making of a Movie Star ». Il y dissèque en détail un système qui l’obligea pendant des décennies à mentir sur son orientation sexuelle.

Le livre sera adapté en 2015 en documentaire (aujourd’hui disponible sur Netflix), où ses amis Clint Eastwood, Debbie Reynolds et Robert Wagner viennent rendre un hommage appuyé à celui qui a passé la majeure partie de sa carrière dans un placard certes doré mais étroit. On y entend notamment l’acteur ouvertement gay George Takei qualifier Hunter d’« incarnation de la masculinité américaine »

It’s been 40 years since Olivia Newton-John, 69, and John Travolta, 64, joined forces to play good girl Sandy and bad boy Danny in 1978’s Grease. Together they made movie history (the film earned almost $400 million worldwide) and also launched a friendship that has lasted four decades.

“We did something life-changing, making that film,” Newton-John tells PEOPLE. “[At the premiere] you got the feeling from the energy that something was happening. It was a huge response. I feel grateful to be a part of that and to have worked with him. We’ve stayed friends ever since.”

To mark the occasion, Paramount recently released a 40th anniversary DVD edition of Grease, which includes a fully restored version of the film and bonus features.

Travolta, who was just 23 when he starred in the film, says he and Newton-John have been by each other’s side through the best and worst times of their lives. The actor wed actress Kelly Preston in 1991 and is dad to Ella Bleu, 18, and Benjamin, 7; their oldest son Jett died of a seizure in 2009. While Newton-John, who has been married to John Easterling since 2008 and is the mom to Chloe, 32, revealed last spring that she was battling
breast cancer again after first being diagnosed in 1992.

En 1961, à la Rydell High School, deux ans après les aventures de Sandy. C’est son cousin, Michael, qui débarque au lycée. Très vite, on le considère comme l’intello de service. Et tout de suite, il tombe raide amoureux de Stéphanie Zinone, la chef des « Pink Ladies ». L’autre bande phare de l’école, c’est bien sûr les « T-Birds », dont fait partie Johnny, l’ex-petit ami de Stephanie. Michael est décidé à séduire celle qu’il aime. Il prend alors des cours de moto et devient le meilleur d’entre tous. Sans révéler son identité, il arrive à soulever la curiosité de la belle…

Grease 2 sera un échec commercial impressionnant, souffrant de son inévitable comparaison avec le film original. Pourtant, Grease 2, conspué très sévèrement par la critique et ignoré du public à sa sortie, n’est pas si déshonorant que ça. 
D’ailleurs, le film mérite d’être vu pour voir les réels premiers pas devant la caméra de la sublime Michelle Pfeiffer.

GREASE SUR TEVA

Il paraît que certains n’ont pas encore vu Grease ! Téva a pensé à vous en diffusant dans la même soirée les deux films.

Le premier est le plus connu et a mis sur orbite John Travolta et Olivia Newton-John. Cet amour de collège est rendu magique par un retour dans le passé (dans les années 60), des gros clichés et des chansons devenues cultes.

Le second possède une trame plus crédible, mais a eu moins de succès. Pourtant dans le rôle principal, il y avait Michelle Pfeiffer.

Un plaisir régressif et des chansons entraînantes, que demander de plus ?

Rendez vous donc sur Téva le mardi 6 février à 20h50 !

6Ter nous repropose une soirée GREASE suivi du  GREASE 2, mardi 20 septembre .. histoire de ne pas trop déprimer en cette rentrée 2016 !

Michelle Pfeiffer et Maxwell Caulfield, les héros du 2ème volume étaient beaux comme des dieux mais le scénario un peu mince et le manque d'alchimie entre les 2 stars ne fera pas de ce volet un film mémorable !
