Grease star Stockard Channing has told how she had to learn to love the high school musical after originally dismissing the worldwide hit as a children’s film. At 33 she played the teenager Rizzo in what she thought was just a summer job and was surprised when Grease became a massive hit when it opened in 1978.
She said: “I used to be grumpy about Grease because I thought it was a kids’ movie or something. But now it’s sort of amazing. I’m very proud of it. It became eternal.”
Channing, now 77, is about to take to the stage in London to play a sixty-something mother in rural America whose grown-up daughter tells her that she is about to take her own life.
