Produced by the team who brought you INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door will take us through the life of the out gay entertainer who married Liza Minelli and whose song ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ is still considered our unofficial national anthem.
Starring Joel Jackson as Peter Allen, the cast also includes Rebecca Gibney as Allen’s mother Marion Woolnough, Sigrid Thornton as Judy Garland, Rob Mills as Allen’s first musical partner Chris Bell and Sara West as Liza Minnelli.
The two-part series will follow the rise of Allen as an entertainer from the NSW outback to Hollywood when he was managed by Garland at the age of 20.
Allen was the first Australian to win an Oscar for Arthur’s Theme and a Grammy for ‘I Honesty Love You sung’ by Olivia Newton-John.
He married Liza Minelli in 1967, and when they divorced 7 years later Allen came out of the closet with his partner Gregory Connell.
Allen died at the age of 48 in 1984 of AIDS-related throat cancer. His music lives on, with vibrant performances and iconic tunes continuing to entertain through the musical The Boy from Oz.
