MF: Lastly, you’re a self-taught singer, you started singing as a teenager in the Netherlands and the rest was history. How did you find your way into the heavier genres?

Sharon: I grew up with parents who loved music from left to right, they were into Black Sabbath, but they also liked Queen, and so many different bands and genres. They were into all kinds of music, and I grew up with that so I already had a lot of background with different kinds of music that I knew because of that. But then when I got into my first band, I was surrounded by mostly boys and they got me into the Iron Maidens of this world, so I got a bit of that as well into my listening repertoire. But my first love was actually grunge music, so Nirvana, you name them, Pearl Jam and those kinds of bands. When I was 17, that’s what got me into the heavier music. And then I just discovered more and more. Of course, I loved Metallica and those kinds of bands, so from that point it gradually got me into the heavier stuff and that was really nice. And you start experimenting, of course! Actually, when I started making music, this is totally not very metal to say, but it’s the truth, and I still love her voice. And unfortunately she died back in 2022, but Olivia Newton-John, when I was a small girl she was my big hero. I was like: oh my god, she sounds so beautiful and she looks so beautiful! And that made me actually start singing. I still admire her, and every time I hear her music or hear her voice, it still does a lot to me. That was actually what got me into music and I started exploring myself as a signer. I was singing with a microphone and a recording tape in front of the mirror, of course like every girl does when they start singing. As I’ve grown older, I’ve of course discovered more bands and different styles. I love Janis Joplin, but also Mariah Carey, she is the Steve Vai among vocalists. I tasted so many different styles that I liked and tried out, and I finally did discover that heavy music is my thing, but I will always love Olivia Newton John.

There have been many things written about Olivia Newton-John this past week. All good things. Beyond owning a property in the local area she was active in many environmental issues in the region. One in particular, the 12-year battle to save ‘Fern Gully’ in Coorabell from being dammed, is not well known to locals, but is one of the most important environmental battles won in Byron. This dam would have shattered the heart of the hinterland forever....

Début de sacre pour Olivia Newton-John aux USA et chez CASHBOX en cette fin d'année 1974 !

ONJ a deux albums dans le TOP100 des albums Country de 1974 ! 
LET ME BE THERE en 4ème place et IF YOU LOVE ME  LET ME KNOW  en 23ème position .. et ce malgré le carton de I HONESTLY LOVE YOU ! 

ONJ est la number 1 dans la série nouvelle chanteuse POP et 6ème dans la catégorie chanteuse Country !



Elle est 20ème dans la catégorie TOP100 Albums POP avec IF YOU LOVE ...

....et chez BILLBOARD, l'album IF YOU LOVE ME ME a regagné 2 petites places dans le BILLBOARD 200 !

Fin d'année pas si explosive pour l'album et le single SOUL KISS ! Chez CASHBOX, l'album est classé à la 68ème place dans le TOP100 et le single à la 67ème ! Dans les rapports du magazine de fin d'année, ONJ n'a plus vraiment la cote et ce avec l'arrivée de nouvelles chanteuses : Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston ou Sade  ..

Et puis ONJ a sans doute l'esprit un peu ailleurs .. avec l'arrivée de sa fille pour le début de l'année 86 .. ! Cela limite toute promotion intensive pour soutenir le projet SOUL KISS !

Chez BILLBOARD, ça n'est pas mieux : L'album perd 11 places dans le Billboard 200 et le single 18 dans le HOT100 !

Emotional Tangle

Dans la série, Kay trouve des petites perles, voici un promo hollandais du 45 tours "Emotional Tangle".

"Emotional Tangle" écrit par John Farrar et le regretté Billy Thorpe devait être le 3ème single, pour certains pays européens (après "Soul Kiss" et "Toughen Up"), extrait du très controversé album "Soul Kiss" sorti en 1985.

Suite à une mauvaise promotion de ses albums en Europe, Olivia Newton-John avait quitté EMI pour le label Mercury/Phonogram.

"Voici un nouveau titre de Olivia Newton-John extrait de son dernier album SOUL KISS. EMOTIONAL TANGLE est une puissante ballade qui séduira l'auditeur pour rêver" ... ce sont les mots que les radios devaient trouver avec le 45 tours.

Le visuel du promo était étrangement le même que le 45 tours "Toughen Up", l'autre 2ème single sorti aux USA, en Australie et en Hollande.

Fort du succès en 1981 de la vidéo long format "Physical", Olivia avait décidé de tourner 10 vidéo clips pour assurer la promotion de l'album "Soul Kiss". Olivia n'en tournera que 5 et cessera de faire la promotion de son album et du même coup des singles.

Elle préférera endosser son plus beau rôle, celui de maman avec l'arrivée en février 1986 de sa fille Chloe lattanzi.

"Emotional Tangle" ne sera jamais classé dans les charts, ni ne sortira dans les bacs. 

Cette superbe ballade produite par John Farrar sera illustrée cependant par une vidéo super méga kitsch !

On aime ou on n'aime pas mais c'est du pur made in 80's ...
