Advance Australia Fair

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - SEPTEMBER 27: Olivia Newton John performs the national anthem during the 2014 AFL Grand Final match between the Sydney Swans and the Hawthorn Hawks at Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 27, 2014 in Melbourne, Australia.

- Big weekend for Livvy

It was a long time between grand final drinks for Saturday's anthem singer Olivia Newton-John, who last tackled the ups and downs of Advance Australia Fair at a season-ender in 1986, when the Hawks bested her favoured Blues by seven goals. But time hasn't dimmed the honour of the invitation. Before Saturday's clash, she told Heckler: "It's such an honour to be asked to do it and Tom Jones is going to be on, too. I love him, so I'm excited about that."

It is a big Melbourne weekend all round for the singer, who on Sunday will have the streets of Ivanhoe closed off for her second annual Wellness Walk - a fund-raiser for the wellness programs at her cancer centre at the Austin Hospital.
"The government pays for the cancer centre, but for the wellness programs we need to get support from the public," Newton-John said.
Anyone can take part in the event, which kicks off at The Centre in Ivanhoe from 11am (you can register from 8.30am).

Details and donations at oliviaappeal.com. The hike through the suburban streets will end with a street party featuring ONJ herself, Joe Camilleri, James Blundell and Jiordan Tolli.

AFL Footy Show

Olivia Newton John got two for the price of one as she arrived at AFL Footy Show Grand Finale in Melbourne on Thursday night.

World-famous twins Benji and Joel Madden made a beeline for the Australian icon posing on either side of the blonde bombshell as they formed a Madden brother Sandra Dee sandwich backstage at the Rod Laver Arena.
The 65-year-old beauty was making a personal appearance at the Melbourne event ahead of performing at Sydney's MCG on Saturday, where she'll sing the National Anthem.

Looking chic in a monochrome print dress the Grease singer beamed for the camera as she rubbed shoulders backstage with the 35-year-old Good Charlotte singers.
Speaking to Channel Nine at the arena the singer said she was impressed by the show.
'I couldn't believe how big it was, it was really a hoot to be a part of.'

She's the one they want: Olivia Newton-John to sing GF national anthem

AUSTRALIAN music icon Olivia Newton-John is set to give the AFL Grand Final's pre-match entertainment a physical edge.

The Melbourne-born singer and actress will perform the national anthem this year.

Twenty-eight years have passed since the four-time Grammy award winner last sang Advance Australia Fair at the 1986 Grand Final between Hawthorn and Carlton.

Two months ago, the League approached Newton-John, telling her she was the one that they wanted performing at the MCG on the final Saturday in September, and she was keen to commit.

"It was my birthday last time I did it, and my daughter was just a little girl, so it's been a while," Newton-John told AFL.com.au.

"I am very honoured to be asked to do it again, it should be fun.

"It's such a huge event, it's one of the biggest sporting events of the year in Australia. It's a bit nerve-wracking because you want to get it right, but it's exciting, there's a lot of energy from the crowd.

"Although the fans are very focused on the game, so they're probably thinking ‘Get off and get the game started!’"

Newton-John has been hopelessly devoted to Carlton since she was a little girl living around Melbourne University, and admitted she has had “the blues over the Blues” this season.

But her Melbourne roots mean she'll be hoping a Victorian-based side wins the flag this year.

The last time she sang at the Grand Final, the Hawks were victorious, and she said she might just be a good luck charm for the brown and gold should they make the final two.

Following the Grand Final, the 65-year-old will take part in The Wellness Walk on Sunday September 28, which will raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at Austin Health.

The centre provides numerous programs and support groups such as meditation, yoga, art and music therapy for people diagnosed with cancer.

"In the first year over 10,000 people visited the centre, which is amazing," Newton-John said.

"We've got 190 group programs which shows the need that's there. There is a real need for the current support we're offering, that's why the walk is so important and the gala, to raise funds."
