Pour la première fois, Newton-John a écrit toutes les chansons et coproduit l’album.
Gaia fut le premier album de Newton-John depuis qu’elle a été diagnostiquée d’un cancer du sein en 1992. Beaucoup de chansons ont été écrites sur son expérience, comme « Why Me » et « Not going to Give into It », ainsi que sur son intérêt pour la préservation.
Gaia a été enregistré en Australie et publié par plusieurs labels indépendants à l’international, sauf en Australie où Newton-John était encore signée chez Festival Records.
