Les 36 000 élèves de primaire résidant à Bristol, en Angleterre, auront la chance de planter au moins un arbre dans leur cour de récréation. Cette action s’inscrit dans le projet écologique que défend depuis des années Olivia Newton-John.
Un projet voué à couvrir, à plus ou moins long terme, le reste de la planète. La dite initiative s’appelle "One Tree Per Child" (un arbre par enfant) et implique, outre la plantation d’arbres, des rencontres entre enfants et experts de l’environnement.
Ce n’est pas étonnant de la part d’Olivia Newton-John qui a déjà planté plus de 10 000 arbres en Australie, son pays natal. « A mon avis, il est très profitable pour la société que les jeunes sortent, mettent la mains à la terre, et plantent des arbres. C’est vraiment réjouissant pour nous que Bristol soit la première ville du monde à participer au projet « One Tree Per Child ». Dans les années à venir, les enfants qui vont planter un arbre, pourront regarder en arrière et se dire « C’était mon arbre » - J’ai vraiment aidé à changer les choses », a déclaré l’ex-star de Grease.
Bristol, capitale écologique
Pourquoi Bristol ? Parce que la ville a été désignée capitale verte de l’Europe en 2015. « Planter arbres et arbustes est un bon moyen pour les écoliers de se connecter à l’environnement et à leur communauté locale. Leur engagement envers l’environnement et leur sens de la communauté grandit en même temps que leur arbre », affirme George Ferguson, le maire de Bristol.
« J’espère que Bristol sera la première ville d’une longue série à planter autant d’abres qu’il y a d’écoliers », ajoute Lord Stern, auteur d’un rapport sur l’économie du changement climatique et patron de One Tree Per Child. « Si les autres villes suivent l’exemple de Bristol, des millions d’arbres pourraient être plantés dans le monde entier ».
Bien qu’engagée, Olivia Newton-John n’était pas présente au lancement du projet, à Bristol. La star est actuellement en Australie avec un planning chargé !

Olivia Newton-John launches Bristol tree-planting project
European Green Capital for 2015 becomes first city in the world to roll out One Tree Per Child initiative
All of Bristol’s 36,000 primary school pupils will get the chance to plant at least one tree as part of a global initiative launched by the pop star and actor Olivia Newton-John.
Bristol is the first city in the world to roll out the One Tree Per Child initiative, which will also involve experts going into schools and talking to youngsters about the environment.
The city council will cover the cost of the trees and tools. If a school does not have spare land to plant its children’s share of the trees, the authority will find a plot for them.
Newton-John, who has planted over 10,000 trees at her home in Australia, said: “I believe that society benefits when young children get out, get their hands in the earth, and plant trees. It’s so exciting for us that Bristol will be the first city in the world to roll out the One Tree Per Child project. In years to come, the children who plant a tree will be able to look back and say: ‘That was my tree - I really made a difference!’”
Bristol’s mayor, George Ferguson, said the city’s role as the European Green Capital for 2015 made it the ideal place to launch the scheme. He said: “Planting trees and shrubs is a great way for school children to connect to the environment and their local community. As a child’s tree grows, their commitment to the environment and their local community grows as well.”
Lord Stern, author of an influential report on the economics of climate change and patron of One Tree Per Child, said he hoped Bristol would be the first of many cities and towns around the world to adopt the policy of planting one tree per child.
He added: “Having tens of thousands of children involved in tree planting will make Bristol a wonderful role model. If other cities follow Bristol’s example by planting one tree per child, millions of trees could be planted around the world.”
The scheme was being launched in Avonmouth, Bristol, on Monday morning. Newton-John was not attending in person. Instead the co-founder of the project, environmentalist Jon Dee, was there with the mayor, the television presenter Naomi Wilkinson and children from three local schools.
Ironically, across the city, environmental activists continue to camp in trees threatened by a new bus scheme. Bailiffs are expected any day now to try to remove them from the treetops on land just off the M32 north of the city.
