SEXIST ISN’T THE WORD! GREASE IS ‘JUST A FUN LOVE STORY’

IT has faced modern crit- icism for promoting the stereotype that a woman must ultimately change who she is to bag the man of her dreams. But Olivia Newton- John has now rubbished claims that the 1978 hit musical Grease is sexist and insisted it is just a ‘fun love story’ about a ‘girl who loves a guy’. 

 

The actress, 72, played good girl Sandy, opposite John Travolta’s rebellious Danny, in the tale of a mismatched teenage couple in 1950s America. 

 At the end of the film, Sandy ditches her cardigans in favour of a skin-tight catsuit, high heels and red lipstick to win Danny over, while he attempts to tone down his wild ways. ‘Everyone forgets that, at the end, he changes for her, too,’ Newton-John told The Guardian. 

 ‘It’s just a girl who loves a guy, and she thinks if she does that, he’ll like her. And he thinks if he does that, she’ll like him. ‘ I think that’s pretty real. 

People do that for each other. It was a fun love story.’ Sandy’s decision to go against her nature and dress provocatively to impress Danny at the end of the film has been dubbed sexist in recent years. Meanwhile, last year it was reported that a prequel was in the works, focusing on Danny and Sandy’s first meeting. 

Olivia Newton-John réfute les affirmations selon lesquelles la comédie musicale à succès de 1978, Grease, est sexiste et a insisté sur le fait qu'il ne s'agissait que d'une «histoire d'amour amusante» sur une «fille qui aime un mec». 

L’actrice a bien joué Sandy, face au rebelle Danny interprété par John Travolta, dans l’histoire d’un couple d’adolescents dépareillé dans l’Amérique des années 1950. 

 À la fin du film, Sandy abandonne ses cardigans au profit d'une combinaison moulante, de talons hauts et de rouge à lèvres pour séduire Danny, alors qu'il tente d'atténuer ses manières sauvages. «Tout le monde oublie qu’à la fin, il change aussi pour elle», a déclaré Newton-John au Guardian. 

 «C’est juste une fille qui aime un mec, et elle pense que si elle fait ça, il l’aimera. Et il pense que s’il fait ça, elle l’aimera. «Je pense que c’est assez réel. Les gens font ça les uns pour les autres. C'était une histoire d'amour amusante. » 

La décision de Sandy d'aller à l'encontre de sa nature et de s'habiller de manière provocante pour impressionner Danny à la fin du film a été qualifiée de sexiste ces dernières années. 

Pendant ce temps, l’année dernière, il a été rapporté qu’une préquelle était en préparation, axée sur la première rencontre de Danny et Sandy.
