Remembering Xanadu, the Roller Disco Cult Movie ELO Would Rather You Forget

This year, the Electric Light Orchestra finally got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a well-deserved capstone on many years of great music. (The induction ceremony, which took place April 7, will be broadcast for the first time on HBO on Saturday, April 29.) In the estimation of the famously grumpy Jeff Lynne, that great music does not include ELO’s involvement in the 1980 movie Xanadu, the disco-era movie musical starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. In one of his few public comments on the film, Lynne complained to Rolling Stone, “I wrote half the songs, though I’ve never seen the thing. I don’t suppose anybody else has, either. It was supposed to be really bad. I don’t think I’ll ever see the movie after reading the reviews.”

Lynne’s comments certainly aren’t surprising. Xanadu has endured this kind of disdain for decades. In fact, it was the film that famously inspired the formation of the Razzies, the anti-Oscars that ridicule the worst movies of the year.

Yet Xanadu is a fascinating artifact to look back on today, a bright, colorful musical that came out during a major transitional period in pop culture. Released a year after the collapse of disco, the film was clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. But fans of Xanadu, who have been often been dubbed "Xanadudes," "Xanadames" and “Museheads,” have only continued to grow in the nearly 40 years since the film was released. Whatever Xanadu’s flaws — and it is indeed a messy hodgepodge — you almost can’t call it a guilty pleasure anymore because so many fans have openly enjoyed it.

En 2010 Alison Goldfrapp déclarait : "I love Olivia Newton-John. Probably because I feel like when I look at her, she's completely the opposite of me: she's kind of sweet and lovely and looks really innocent and fresh and gorgeous, and she's probably really nice and wholesome.
"I'm the complete opposite!" she laughs.
GOLDFRAPP est de retour avec un nouvel et splendide album SILVER EYE dont est extrait ce nouveau titre SYSTEMAGIC !

On a pas oublié sa superbe version d'un PHYSICAL joliment revisité

“I Honestly Love You” Olivia Newton John Count Basie Theater Red Bank NJ

Review: Clearwater fans remain hopelessly devoted to an ageless, courageous Olivia Newton-John
Admit it, we all had a thing for her. Most of us still do.

Olivia Newton-John plays Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Florida on April 20, 2017.

Ask anyone who grew up in the 1970’s (and the 1980’s as well, for that matter) which fair-haired, Australian female vocalist owned radio, TV and silver screen markets and the answer is quite obvious. The gorgeous, golden-locked singer that was just about everywhere for that timespan is Olivia Newton-John. Whether dominating country music radio airwaves through the early days of her rise to fame or through her blockbuster appearance in the 1978 high school musical Grease until her days of pseudo-new wave experimentation in the early 80’s, Olivia and her beaming smile and likeable image made quite an impact.

Fast forward through many decades and the multi-talented entertainer, now 68, has retained a loyal, faithful fan base that enables her to still tour the globe and attract sell out crowds around the world.

Olivia Newton-John charms Sharon audience with trip through her catalog of hits

Olivia Newton-John is eternal.
The iconic performer was on display in all her musical and physical glory Sunday during a sold out show at The Sharon.

At 68 – blonde, trim and stunning—Newton-John can still cast the reflection of Sandy, the virginal-sexpot from “Grease.” She flashed slinky aerobic moves while singing “Physical,” and played a tempting disco queen on “Magic.” She possessed the alluring look of an urban cowgirl on the song “Let Me Be There.”
And she can still deliver a ballad like “I Honestly Love You” that touches the heart.
But the real highlight of this 75-minute concert came during an encore, with a riveting performance of “Over the Rainbow.”
The song will forever belong to Judy Garland but on this night, Newton-John put her own, emotional stamp on the standard.

Newton-John seems so perfect and ageless, it’s hard to believe that she coped with adversity.
“Everybody has challenges,” Newton-John said from the stage. “My biggest challenge was breast cancer in 1992. I had a rough time and I returned to live on my farm in Australia.
“One night, I had a terrible anxiety attack. I woke up in the middle of the night and I got out of bed and sat at my little electric piano. I wrote a song that summed up how I felt about beating cancer or anything else.”
The song is “Not Gonna Give Into It,” and it has become a cancer-survivor’s anthem, with the lyric, “In the end, it’s all up to me.”
Newton-John sang the song with a Latin beat and combative passion. You had the feeling that nothing can stop this determined woman.
Newton-John took the crowd on a musical tour of her career that spans a half-century.
“Hello Villages,” she said at the start of the show. “How lovely it is to be here. I’m going to be showing some videos and singing my old songs; I hope you remember them.”

Au Royaume-Uni, l'album et les singles connaissent le même succès : You're the One That I Want (numéro 1 pendant 9 semaines), Summer Nights (pendant 7 semaines). Grease, Hopelessly Devoted to You et Sandy deviennent également des « Top 3 ».
L'album atteint le sommet des « charts » américains durant l'été 1978, détrônant "Some Girls" des Rolling Stones.

Olivia Newton-John was reluctant to lend her name to a cancer research centre in her hometown in Melbourne. The 68-year-old singer and actress overcame breast cancer in the 1990s and opened the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in the Australian city three years ago.
“I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to get behind having a building with my name on it,” admits the Grease star. “It was all very overwhelming. And I asked my mother and she said, ‘Listen darling, if you can help somebody, then you should do it’. That was just the most important, basic and obvious answer… I’ll do it.”
Olivia lends more than her moniker to the cause. She donated a portion of the proceeds from every ticket to her three-year Summer Nights Las Vegas residency (which ended in December) to the centre.

Pour la photo .. on sait déjà qu'ONJ est "sensational" sur scène !

Olivia Newton-John delivered a sensational performance this past Friday night (April 7, 2017)) inside the Grand Event Center of the Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles, La. in front of a capacity crowd. The show featured a variety of music from her pop career, such as “Magic,” “Physical,” and “Make a Move on Me,” as well as country tracks “Please Mr. Please,” “Jolene,” and “Let Me Be There,” and, of course, classics from the hit movie “Grease” such as “You’re the One That I Want,” “Hopelessly Devoted,” and crowd sing-along “Summer Nights.”
