Chart-toppers map Olivia Newton-John's musical journey

When she was a young girl in Australia, Olivia Newton-John remembers going to see one of her pop idols, a famous singer she won’t name, and coming away disappointed by the show.

“She changed the songs and didn’t do the songs I wanted to hear,” Newton-John says by phone from Las Vegas, where’s she’s wrapping up a residency in the Donnie and Marie Showroom in the Flamingo Las Vegas this fall.

“And I made a mental note that if I ever become a famous singer I’ll do them the way people want to hear them,” she says. “Besides, generally the arrangements on my records were really, really beautiful.”

Her second new album, “Christmas With Friends,” is a duet album with John Farnham, a superstar in Australia and a longtime friend who previously has released Christmas albums with everyone from Travolta to country star Vince Gill.

“These are all Christmas standards,” says Newton-John, who will serve as grand marshal for the 85th annual Hollywood Christmas Parade on Nov. 27. “We created Christmas in the studio. We decorated it with decorations and it was really a lot of fun.”

Newton-John says she plans to do a few shows with Sky and Chapman in the United Kingdom and in California after the first of the year. Maybe she’ll continue to play in Las Vegas. She’ll certainly stay involved in philanthropic efforts that include not just the cancer center but work on behalf of animals, an area in which she’s been involved for many years.
