The Olivia Newton-John institute

A global cancer research centre at Melbourne's Austin Hospital will be replaced by a new institute - named for Olivia Newton-John and attached to the cancer treatment centre already bearing her name - after long-term American funding for Austin scientists was withdrawn.
Premier Denis Napthine will announce the creation of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute on Monday, with his predecessor, former Labor premier John Brumby, named as chair.
Mr Brumby accepted the appointment after a personal written appeal from Newton-John, who will speak at Monday's announcement with the premier.
The founding of the new institute follows a decision by the American-based Ludwig Institute to restructure its involvement with affiliated cancer research bodies around the world.

The Ludwig had provided about 50 per cent of the funding for Austin scientists and says it has spent $250 million on cancer research in Australia over 35 years.

In welcoming creation of the new institute, the Ludwig has promised transitional funding for existing Austin research and will contribute to future clinical studies.
Professor Jonathan Cebon, who will continue as medical director at the new institute, said in light of the Ludwig's decision it was decided to create a comprehensive cancer centre under one name, with the existing treatment facility named after Newton-John now linked with a research body that also bears her name.
"With Ludwig departing we had to maintain and wanted to continue to do research," Professor Cebon said.

"It was important for us to be recognised with our association with the cancer centre, and Olivia's name and commitment and the affection for her has been an enormous plus. You want one name and it emphasises that this is one enterprise. It's a collaborative enterprise."

In an exclusive interview with Fairfax Media, Newton-John said the naming of the new institute was "a huge honour. Really, I didn't expect it at all. I'm really thrilled because the research is such an important part of the work we do there."
